Sarah Palin got me thinking
Why the heck do people consider HUNTING a SPORT?!!! killing, a sport. It honestly makes me ill. and its not a good reason to say "I'm helping to control the .....population". and then to take your kids hunting - umm, wrong. ok, done venting.

Hunting is a sport because it does take skill which any sport does. And it takes practice etc.

I guess it's just what you grow up with or your lifestyle. My father's family hunts, I've been around it all my life.
But you can add fishing, boxing and this extreme fighting. I don't get any of those, to me, it's just beating each other up, yet boxing is an Olympic event. Dh has tried to explain the "sport" in boxing to me, it completely evades me.
Everyone has a different view of it.

MMA or Mixed Martial Arts requires TONS of skills - learning at least 5 different types of fighting from around the world- including boxing
it is totally not just beating people up
ETA- and no one gets killed in a UFC fight
so I don't make the connection to hunting

I can attest to this. And yes, I used to hunt. Many people in all areas of the world teach their children to hunt. Honestly the people I know that grew up around it have much more respect for life and for what a gun can do than people who don't.
I don't necessarily agree with it for "sport" but I do think that in a large part of the world it is how people eat. Even in the US.

So a poor "player" will just maime or severely injure an animal, who will be left to be devoured and killed by another animal since he can no longer defend himself? Good times.
I can almost see the sport in using a bow and arrow, but how much talent or skill does using a GUN take? because i've been to a firing range, and it isn't rocket science. it doesn't seem to me like this "sport" is fair.
i could never have married a hunter.

Re: Sarah Palin got me thinking
I was not going to say anything when the orignial post was posted about Palin being pro life and being a hunter.
But, here I go. I feel I need to say my piece.
I was raised in a family that believes hunting is good and NECESSARY for our forests. I was raised that hunting is a sport.
Hunting is not just for the thrill of the kill, it is to preserve nature. Do you know what happens in over populated areas where there are too many deer, fish, turkey's, etc? They cause disease and they end up eating each other or killing other animals. It is a proven fact that there is not enough 'food' for the starving deer and turkey in our NY and CT woods. My dad hunts as a sport, but also for the meat and to preserve wildlife. We eat EVERY bit of the meat my dad brings home.
My dad and the people he hunts with also has rules, he does not and WILL NOT kill a doe deer (deer without antlers, a female) because they will help continue to populate our areas. Also, if he does in fact 'miss' and not fully kill an animal, he will search for that animal until he finds it, they usually dont go far.
All of the people that posted that are against hunters, are you also vegetarians? Do you not eat any meat? Do you realize what happens to the cows and lamb etc? They are slaughtered, plain and simple.
back in the old times, my parents parents parents used to Kill animals to SURVIVE. Why is this much different?
And to comment on the Jesus comment that was stated in the last topic- Wasnt Jesus a fisherman?
I could say a lot more, but I think I have given a fair opinion.

a gun takes a lot of skill and talent to shoot accurately. those that just go into the woods and shoot something are usually the ones that end up injuring the deer or turkey or whatever game you are aiming at.

Posted by ready2ttc I can almost see the sport in using a bow and arrow, but how much talent or skill does using a GUN take? It is not as easy as it seems. And being to a firing range is not the same as hunting IRL.
I will agree that there is way more skill involved in B&A. I personally cannot draw or control a 60 Lb bow.
