Sasha has been sleeping for 2.5 hours!
Thank you Dr. Weissbluth!!
Ok, she did wake up once to nurse, and then I have had to rub her belly once or twice but, I have a napper here!!!
It definitely took me at least 4 or 5 days to really notice the sleep cues and time it right-- but, it's been working! She still doesn't normally sleep too long-- this is the longest, but I really think it's making a difference to progressively get to longer, less naps and a better nighttime sleep.
I am happy. They should rename the book, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Mommy.

Whats the name of the book???
Although DS is a GREAT napper, he is still waking up once or twice to eat at night! I'm really yearning for 1 night of uninterrupted sleep!

Good for you!!!
I know the feeling, I'm determined to get DD to nap today. I think I have the only kid who DOESN'T nap during rainy days!!!

healthy sleep habits, happy baby.
I haven't really had any luck with the nighttime since I am tackling naps first, hoping that night will rectify itself once the naps improve. But, Sasha has always fallen asleep by herself at night-- daytime was my issue.
But, since starting this, we have been able to drop one middle of the night feeding-- since we are trying to soothe first, as opposed to being quick to feed.

I'm so jealous! DS takes two half hour naps per day. I thought for sure he would nap for longer today as his room is so dark from this horrible weather. I think I need to read that book!!!

it's not necessarily like the book is magic or anything. It really is about being proactive about naps, and staying ahead of the game.
Before checking out the book (which I have had since before I delivered--- but never got a chance to actually READ), I just let Sasha go with the flow-- and fall asleep when and where she felt like it. But, she only slept for 30 mins at a clip and was getting increasingly cranky THEN, she started to wake up multiple times at night when before she was STTN, then once when we moved up her bedtime. I knew I had to do something, and not go with the flow.
You just have to look for the drowsy cues and not the obviously tired ones. That's the key. When I first started doing this-- it still took me 30 mins of shushing, rocking, nursing-- whatever to get her to sleep. Literally a week later after I got a little better at it, she goes in the crib-- MAYBE I hear a whimper, I just go in and pat her belly, put the paci back in if need be-- and voila! Sleeping baby.

Sasha was doing five 30 min naps a day--- her naps are getting longer based on when I put her down and ALWAYS in the crib.

What are some of the drowsy cues?
I don't have the book in front of me-- but:
Drowsy Cues yawning less vocal calmer less interested in things around them slower motions
Overtired Cues Fussiness Rubbing Eyes Crying
In the beginning, I would see Sasha yawn-- then she would start "talking", so I thought-- ok, not really tired yet. But, I was waiting too long. Now I see one or two yawns and in the crib she goes. The vocal factor didn't really work for me.
I also started swaddling her for naps-- because we were watching her, and she would fall asleep, then startle and wake herself up.
The right paci is also important-- we have a bunch of different types and the soothies fall out of her mouth much more.

Thanks! Going to start paying more attention to these cues. He is sleeping great at night so maybe I should not complain???

Re: Sasha has been sleeping for 2.5 hours!
I just got this book yesterday and I need to find the time to read it. DD has been up since 1:30 this afternoon, it is now over 4 hours later...it's just not normal for a 5 week old! I've tried everything to get this kid to nap. Go figure on a day like today, she is wide awake and alert.
