Sayville woman not slain...

Does anyone wonder how she actually died?

"Suffolk County police have concluded that the Sayville woman found dead in her home on Monday morning was not the victim of foul play, authorities said Tuesday.

Detectives found Joia Gigante, 49, in a confined space inside her basement three days after she was reported missing last week. Family and police had conducted an extensive hunt to locate her -- posting fliers around Sayville with her picture and searching the area with patrol officers, helicopters, boats and search dogs.

Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick, commanding officer of the Homicide Squad, said search dogs were brought into the Terry Street home during the department's manhunt, but that Gigante was "in a confined space that you wouldn't have anticipated for her body to be in."

He declined to go into a detailed description of that space, other than to say it was also behind furniture and other belongings in the basement.

Following an autopsy Tuesday, he said the squad has concluded that her death "does not involve any criminal conduct."

Gigante, a mother of three sons, had been living with her boyfriend when she went missing on Friday evening. Police had initially characterized her disappearance as suspicious because she appeared to have left the home without any money, keys, cell phone, or her car.

Gigante's family declined to comment on her death or the police investigation, wishing to state only that she was a "very thoughtful, loving, great individual," who is also leaving behind a mother, two sisters, and many nieces and nephews.

She will be waked Wednesday and Thursday at the James Funeral Home in Massapequa. Burial Friday will be in the Pinelawn Memorial Park."
