Scholastic book fair at nursery school
Tomorrow, we have access to the book fair at the girls' school. I haven't been to one since I was a kid. Do I have to buy something? Is it cash only? Do proceeds go to the school? I'm concerned only because I'm not used to having extra expenses during the month, and money is so tight.... I feel like we are always dishing out for "something".
We pay tuition for the school, and we've already gotten assignments to provide snacks, fundraiser candles, popcorn, and now this. It's normal, right?

Scholastic book fair at nursery school
Book fairs are normal in grade school and above. Not sure how "normal" in nursery school. Proceeds go to the school, they take cash, check or credit if it's Scholastic. They have cheap books and pricier ones, our fair often stocks a few $1.50-$2.50 selections.

Re: Scholastic book fair at nursery school
not sure about the book fair. I don't think it helps you earn MONEY for your school... but I think they give the teachers free books or stuff like that for the classrooms.
yup- sounds pretty normal :-/ my DS is in nursery school 3 AMs a week, and we are ALWAYS getting fundraisers sent home!! BUT... the way his school works is that when you register them, part of the thing is that you are required to fundraise so much $$ over the school year ( $100). If you don't want to buy stuff, you can just write a check for the $100 and be done. BUT they like to send home a bunch of different fundraisers to give you a lot of chances to get that money by selling stuff... or so maybe you can get some stuff for the money you will have to put out anyway. like for those KidStuff Coupon books- they cost $25. $12 goes toward my fundraising goal, so that is money I would have had to put out anyway, so its not a bad deal. Another one is a frozen pizza fundraiser- which isn't bad either bc we have to eat anyway LOL SO anyway- is it maybe a situation like that? they are just trying to give you guys a lot of chances to meet your fundraising requirement??

I have never heard of a school requiring you to fundraise or forcing you to donate money. I think that would bother me, just out of principle.

Re: Scholastic book fair at nursery school
The preschool I sent my kids to had a book fair one year. If x number were ordered the school received y. If you can't afford it, don't participate. Some books are usually priced at $1 or $2. But if it is in your budget then just don't send in the money. My kids school has a lot of fund raisers and we participate in some but certainly not all of them.

I love the scholastic book fairs. The books are really affordable. I never feel obligated to buy anything though.

Scholastic book fair at nursery school
Daycare has had book fairs since she started at 12 weeks. No push to buy but I usually do since we are a huge book family.

My daycare does book fairs twice a year. We also get our fair share of "donation" requests. The book fair does benefit the teachers so I do buy a few things. I am a teacher and get most of my kids' books thru bonus points, so paying cash gets me a little, but I don't mind bc it supports the school. I usually buy a book for each child's class an call it a day.

Re: Scholastic book fair at nursery school
We have ours right now...I order from scholastic constantly and the paperbacks are a good price, but our fair only had books from $3.99 and up. I thought it was a little pricey and would be better if they had $1-$2 books. They usually have good books though.

Book fair is more for you than for the school. If it stretches you thin, just skip it! It's cash so they aren't keeping track of donations

we had ours 2 weeks ago. dd got 2 books and a pointer for $20. They take cash and credit. The pointers are a huge hit with the kids.

The book fair definitely makes money for the school! Not sure why anyone is saying it doesn't. The Book ORDER forms are for free books for your child's class. The paper that gets sent home from school.

Scholastic book fair at nursery school
I love book fairs, and love that my kids get excited about books. In elementary school, we order a lot through the monthly orders and the book fairs and they are reasonably priced/good deals. (I skip any hard cover books, which tend to be the expensive ones only because they're hard cover). However, the book fair at my daycare was incredibly overpriced. I got much better deals on amazon. I let my kids pick out one book each because they were excited, but that was it. My dad took them once and let them get what they want, and then his jaw dropped when they told him the total price. He ended up returning most of them.when I told the school the books were expensive, they sad the extra money goes to the school. So....we never bought there again. It might not be that way everywhere, but just keep an eye out and ask if it's also a fundraiser.

Of course it's a fundraiser. They aren't just putting the books there to get kids to read more. You tell Scholastic which age groups you have at your book fair, they send the cases of book, school sells them, and makes a profit. It's a huge fundraiser and provides quite a bit for the school. Schools wouldn't go through the hassle of organizing the book fair (which is a lot of work), if they didn't make any money off of it ;)

Same. I never feel obligated but I always buy something b/c I'm nostalgic. Also my DD loves Pete the Cat and Clifford and they usually have quite of few of those character books.
