School aged children- bedtime

What time do you put your elementary school aged child to bed?

How old are they?

My son has a really early bedtime and I am wondering if I should let him stay up a bit longer.

Thanks!

That's about the time my son goes to bed! and I must admit he is getting up a little earlier then he should. He used to wake around 7 and now its closer to 6 am. Way to early. That's why I am wondering what's the norm.

Thanks for your response.

Re: School aged children- bedtime

Well, even though Ava's only 3, she does go to school with me and has to get up at 6:45am, so she's in bed by 7, asleep by 7:30 at the latest. If she had the luxury of taking a bus at a later time, then I'd have her go to bed later. I think you just need to figure out how many hours DC needs to sleep and adjust bedtime backwards from when he wakes up.

Re: School aged children- bedtime

I just answered a similar question!

I let the boys choose their bedtime now. The rule is that they must be in their OWN bed by 9pm with the lights out and done. It allows them to decide if reading another chapter or watching the last part of their show or getting a drink is more important than having ample family cuddle time!

Usually they start heading upstairs around 8 and are asleep by 8:30. On active days they are ready to go up much earlier.

I let them stay awake until 9:30 on weekends but they are so not used to it that they normally are STILL ready to sleep by 8!Chat Icon

Re: School aged children- bedtime

My son is in 1st grade. He has to go into his room at 7:30. If he chooses to watch a DVD or read he can, but he rarely does and is usually asleep by 8.

My other son is in pre-k. He has the same rules and usually chooses to watch a full length DVD. He is never tired in the mornings and is often up way before he needs to be.

I think given the chance, most kids will listen to their bodies.

DS is 5 and in K. He's in bed by 7:50 p.m. and lights out and he's out cold by 8 p.m. He gets up at 7 a.m. and his bus is at 7:48 a.m. So he's getting a good 11 hours sleep.

Such a change for a boy who always went to bed late (10 p.m.) and slept late - sometimes until 9-10 a.m. After his first morning up and a school day, he was so beat, that adjusting to bed at 8 p.m. was not an issue at all! (well, for me its a huge adjustment Chat Icon ).

Re: School aged children- bedtime

DS is in Kindergarten and is in bed (when I'm home from work) at 7:20pm asleep by 7:45. Other nights, I get him in bed as soon as I get home and that is around 8:10, 8:20 the latest.
