Working families who aren't teachers with school-aged children.....
What do you do with your children during the summer and holiday vacations?
I think about it every now and then and the prospect is terrifying! My mom was a teacher so I never knew anything other than Mom being home all summer and vacations with me.
Hopefully DH will have a career change soon and become a teacher, but what do you do if you aren't!?!?!??

I'm not there yet, but they have camps and activities for after school, summer school, etc. The vacations during the school year, well, that's probably when I'll be taking vacation time.
What really worries me is the stage when they are too old for camp and organized summer activities. DH or I will need to figure something out so that someone is home. I don't like the idea of having my teenagers unsupervised all summer long.

I don't have a school aged child, but my ILs watch DD right now so once she is in school during vacations and the summer they will watch her. Hopefully my mom will be able to retire in a few years and she has said that she will help out too.

Camp during the summer.
Vacations -one of us will take off, my mom will cover or my MIL sometimes comes up. Needless to say there aren't a lot of family vacations because they're used up during the school year.

Not there yet, but DS's daycare has camp in the summer, so that is a possibility.
I am currently grooming my 11 year old niece to babysit, but I don't know if she will want to do it all summer when the time comes.

Thanks everyone! I'm not there yet either, I just have no ideas!!!! Our daycare has summer camp too, so I guess that's our option. And what do you do for after school? Does every school have a program nowadays?

My daycare runs all year long. My son is leaving daycare next week and starting with a childminder, so its like at home daycare. She will watch him all year long.

Re: Working families who aren't teachers with school-aged children.....
Thanks for adding something else to my list of worries
Actually, I tease DH that maybe we'll be ready for a 3rd once Ryan's in grade school and hopefully by then I'll be able to stay home for a bit. My mom's a teacher too, so I guess she could help out during the summer - but she has her own small child, and then my two - don't think she'll sign up for that on a daily basis.
Camp sounds like a good plan!
ETS: Actually, if I am working, I'll need a sitter during the school year anyway for after school, so I guess I'll aim to get someone who can help in the summer months.

Gina, it was really tough with Hannah. We had to put her in summer camp which basically ate my ENTIRE salary for the summer. Then on breaks I had to take off or Wayne had to put in for vacation those weeks. It's not even the vacation weeks that are tough, it's the days off here and there for Superintendants conferences, or days off because snow days weren't used.... FUN STUFF!!

My point exactly! For example, Gavin's daycare has a "Teacher Training Day" or some nonsense next Friday, coincidentally falling on Labor Day weekend...guess who has to take the day off? My husband doesn't GET vacation....at all!!!!
