school birthdays
DS is in 2nd grade and will be turning 7 next month. I asked his teacher at open house about bringing in cupcakes or munchkins to celebrate and was told it is no longer allowed. She suggested a veggie platter DS was not happy, i dont blame him! We are trying to think of "simple" snacks to send in - so far fruit salad is our onl idea. Does anyone have any other suggestions, we don't mind cooking/baking! thanks!

Re: school birthdays
I agree that it sux! My SD is fine with cupcakes. As for what you should/could make...what about fruit kabobs or fruit parfaits? Will they allow pudding parfaits? Think outside the box and no way to a salad...LOL

Re: school birthdays
Why no cupcakes? Is it considered unhealthy? or is it that they are worried abouit peanut allergies?
What about ice cream - dixie cups or something like an ice pop if you can bring it over when they celebrate.

Re: school birthdays
Our SC has a healthy snack policy also. No sugary snacks at all. No candy allowed to be given away during Valentines or Halloween. Sucks big time.
We are allowed to bring in baked chips, pretzels, fruits, veggies, goldfish and for drinks water or 100% juice.
Last year we sent individual pretzel bags and small waters. Not as fun as when I was in school and my mom brought in cupcakes.

Re: school birthdays
What about something fun that they can assemble? An easy one is fruit kebobs, and send in yogurt for dipping. At least it would be something that many of them would consider FUN!
I have a friend who got a flower cookie cutter and she made pineapple/grape lollipops...kinda like something in edible arrangements.
She cut the pineapple slice to look like a flower, and skewered it with the grape in the middle so that it looked like the center of the flower!

Re: school birthdays
We can bring in anything we want as long as there are no severe allergies in the class.
As my kids got older, cupcakes are no longer socially acceptable. I was told I needed to get doughnuts.
If I had restrictions, I'd go with an edible arrangement bouquet http://ediblecraftsonline.com/edible_creations/index.htm
how about some kind of healthy muffin? Apple-Cinnamon?

Re: school birthdays
My DD has food allergies, so last year I did ice pops. The kids loved them.

Re: school birthdays
The district I work in is moving toward healthy snacks only (although very few parents are on board so I doubt it's going to move beyond the "suggested" phase LOL)
Anyway, one parent brought in a healthy snack that was a HUGE hit. She premade a huge bowl of fruit salad and brought that in along with ice cream cones (the kind with the flat bottom), chocolate syrup, sprinkles and whipped cream. She put fruit salad in each cone and topped with syrup, sprinkles and whipped cream. The kids went NUTS. The only problem is that if you pre-assemble the cones they will probably get soggy.

Re: school birthdays
We have a no food policy and I am fine with it. The kids seem to love it. They get to pick a special book to have read in class (a parent can come and read it), they get a crown to wear and if you want you can give $15 and a book is donated in their honor to the library.
With allergies and obesity I don't see why food has to be part of a school celebration.
ETA: We are giving out spinning tops to her classmates. She came home with a blow up animal beach ball that she loved. Another day she got a squinkie. Lots of options that don't involve food.

Re: school birthdays
no muffins or cakes allowed but i LOVE the fruit kabobs idea or the pineapple idea. i'm going to suggest these to DS! Thanks everyone for the ideas!
no salad here! DS doesn't even want his Veggies at home, nevermind at school. our district started this policy last year, but they were still allowed to celebrate birthdays...not this year! yet, they still serve cakes, cookies and ice cream at school events and functions- what's a birthday?!

This is my school too this year and I love it. For so many reasons I think it is better to just leave the food treats for home. Too much obesity in the schools--why make it have to be part of a celebration. Also, I am all for keeping food out of the classroom entirely because yuck to bugs and such that tend to go where food is. And the biggest reason is with all the kids with allergies it becomes very difficult to find something that is ok for all. It would be horrible to single a kid out for not being able to take part, and even then, what if someone is highly allergic. I wouldn't want to put that kid at risk where he/she should be safe. I think it's just better to leave it out altogether

Re: school birthdays
I would put fruit into cupcake liners and put a cute topper in them. A lot of schools have a no junk food policy these days.

Re: school birthdays
Our SD is no food at all. They do allow you to bring in a craft and/or goodie bags with no food.
I think the fruit kabobs are a cute idea.

Re: school birthdays
DD's 6th birthday is on Tuesday, and her class has several children with different allergies and we were asked not to bring in any baked goods....only fruit. I opted to make goodie bags for her class instead. I was going to make it without any candy in it because candy is a treat in our house and I dislike it when I get goodie bags thats filled with nothing but candy....but I know thats just our rule and not everyone elses so it will have a lollipop in each.
Contents of the goodie bag -3 mini play doh -an activity book with mazes, dot to dot, things to color, etc. -crayons -mini pinball game -sunglasses -apples to apples card game -mask craft in the girls bags/dinosaur coloring craft for the boys -lollipop

Re: school birthdays
I am a teacher and my school district does have strict policies on bringing food in. We have to have one birthday celebration a month so that they aren't eating "junk" food all the time. I personally think it's sad. One mother sent in fruit salad and ice cream cones. The kids put the fruit salad in the cone with a squirt of whipped cream on top. They ate the fruit with a spoon. It was a cute, festive snack that was still healthy.
