SCHOOL DISTRICT LADIES...
Hello all....also posting this ques. in Parenting...
I work for a school district and they are making so many changes to how they handle maternity leave. If you work for a district just curious....
1. How much time do you get for baby?
2. How long do you get paid for once you give birth? do you use your sick days?
3. How about Health insurance?
THANKS :)

Re: SCHOOL DISTRICT LADIES...
We don't get any paid time besides our sick days. We have to use all of that time first. Then whatever time we want to take on top of that would be through FMLA which is unpaid. Our benefits would continue if we did the FMLA leave...
After that, I think we can take a year of unpaid time without pay or benefits - I'm not sure - I didn't look into that because it's not an option for us personally.
So for me, I've only been with my district a short time (this is my 3rd year) so right now I only have 14 sick days accrued. By the time I have the baby, I'll have 17 sick days. Then I can go "negative" into my days for this school year. So I'll have 20 sick days which would be 4 school weeks.... that will be paid. Whatever I want to take on top of that will be unpaid, so I'm just planning on taking 2 more weeks.

You aren't in NY, are you?
In NY you are legally disabled for 6 weeks (v-birth) or 8 weeks (c-section). You get paid through NYS Disability (it is crap money, but something)
If you have anything beyond that, that is your district, but everyone who works full time in NY gets disability

No, I'm not in NY...
I guess I could probably get paid through disability for the extra 2 weeks...
Oh wait, are you saying that for the whole 6 weeks you'd get paid disability even if you are using sick days from work?

Re: SCHOOL DISTRICT LADIES...
I actually did not get disability....I was on payroll for 6 weeks....8 weeks if I had a c/s....I have to use my sick days....i do have FMLA for 12 weeks that kicked in the first day of school....even though I had her in July....I had insurance all summer at the rate I pay...then the 12 weeks starting sept...we are then paying out of pocket for 2 months.....

I *think* that it depends on the district, but you could either take your days first, then do disability or vice versa (I could be wrong though, I am going on what I know from my friends)
You can get more than NYS offers, but at the very least, you get that. I.e. if they don't offer you anything at all...

Re: SCHOOL DISTRICT LADIES...
In my district we get paid as long as we are under doctors care and have the sick days, but the norm is 6 weeks for vaginal birth, 8 weeks for c-section. You can have up to 12 weeks FMLA but those weeks are unpaid; just your position and insurance are held. After 12 weeks I either have to return or take an unpaid child care leave, of which we get 2 for each birth. However, since I just gave birth in October if I decide to do the unpaid child care leave even though it technically wouldn't start until January, this school year counts as my first year.
I don't hold the benefits; DH is also in education and he holds the benefits for us.
