Needless to say, my DD was pretty disappointed that she was handed someone else's yellow folder while someone else received her "pretty pink hearts folder."  A number of the parents were ticked off at that. Now at least the lists are specific (colors, etc.) so that the kids all have the same items.
This is annoying me too. My DD wants the PINK scissor I bought her. I am so annoyed that the items I bought are going to be handed off to the teacher and my DD won't have her own things.

It depends. Last year my daughter had to get a specific pencil case/box and she was able to keep the scissors that we purchased and because I didn't get her pink last year (assuming it would be pooled based on our previous year) I still haven't heard the end of it.  I bought her pink this year "just in case." LOL
I think the difference is that when they're in kindergarten, they don't have desks to keep their belongings. Instead they're at tables, so it's just easier to pool things. Once they hit 1st, they have their own desks, so they can keep pencil cases and other belongings in their desk.

It depends. ooo, good point! I didn't think of it like that...didn't realize they have desks as they get older. Pink scissors...I so can relate!

So I'm curious to see if any teachers can verify this?
A girlfriend of mine just informed me that the supplies we send in are sent to other schools. So I asked "You mean within our district?" And she said "No. They go to lower-income districts. That's why the need so many pencils and glue sticks and the like."
Knowing this was the case wouldn't deter me from buying what's requested on the class lists and if anything, it would make more sense to me, especially based on the amount of pencils and glue sticks they asked for.

I am not a teacher and we live in NYC but I don't think that is true.
In fact we got stuff back at the end of the year last year (full reams of paper and stuff) and I would have preferred they just either re-used it or donated it.

This absolutely, positively doesn't happen in the district I work in!

The only items I've gotten back were this past year and they were items like scissors, pencil case and binders...all items which had my DC's name on it. I've never gotten back markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue or pencils.
And believe me...it's not that I want the stuff back. I was just curious to know if this may explain the need for such large quantities (4 boxes of pencils, 8 glue sticks, etc..) My girlfriend is usually up on these things as she's very active at the school and knows a lot of people in our district, so I figured there may be some truth to this. (I jokingly call her the Mayor. )

I am a teacher in a Long Island district and we never send anything to other schools/districts. We really do use everything and the few things that might not get used are sent home at the end of the year. It's rare that there are things like pencils and glue sticks left at the end of the year and we often have to ask parents to replenish supplies throughout the year (which only a handful of parent do and then we have to get the supplies ourselves).

I'm a teacher and my mother is a teacher in one of the poorest school districts on Long Island. The only time I have ever heard of school supplies being donated is during sandy. I know at the end of the year when the students clean out their lockers we have a box to drop gently used supplies for students who may need it the next ear.

Not true in my district. I can't imagine that a district would ask for supplies and not tell the parents if the supplies were going to somewhere else besides their child's classroom
