Seaford School District Mammas.....
Over the weekend, I heard that Seaford might be going down to half day kindergarten. Anyone heard similar rumors?

Re: Seaford School District Mammas.....
Oooh- that would be great if you could ask your mom!
I've actually heard a few rumors. One of the other rumors that I heard was that they were thinking of making the Harbor school K-3, and then then Manor school would be 4-6 (or 5). That rumor, I don't mind so much. The half day kindergarten rumor, I do mind. It would mean I would have to quit my job, or send DD to private school (which I really don't want to do!)

Re: Seaford School District Mammas.....
With the budget cuts from Albany a lot of districts seem to be thinking about going to half day. I think I read on here that one district in Suffolk is talking about getting rid of it all together. Since it's not state mandated it's a really easy place for school boards to make cuts.
Wantagh has always been half day, the am session is 9-11:53 and the pm session is 12:53 - 3:30. Levittown has an "extended day" program, which I know from asking one of the teachers is the same curriculum as Wantagh but they add on lunch at school and do 1 extra fine motor skill activity.

That's odd because our Mommy & Me leader said that Levittown may be going to START full day kindergarden in September!! It is half day now.

I hope it's not true about the 1/2 day kindergarden!
I did hear about the possibility that the Harbor would house grades k-2 and Manor grades 3-5.

Re: Seaford School District Mammas.....
I teach in the district so let me address the rumors.
At the last budget hearing, last Thursday night (I encourage all residents to attend, for future dates and times check the district website), a three phase budget was presented to the Board of Education and the community.
Each phase outlined exactly to what areas cuts would be made and how much. Phase one was a 4.1% budget to budget tax increase with cuts of over $2 million dollars. Phase two, a 3.22% budget to budget tax increase includes all of the cuts made to phase one plus additional cuts of $470,000 and phase three, a 2.33% budget to budget increase or Contingency budget (% outlined by NYS law) includes the cuts outlined in phase one, phase two and a third phase of cuts totaling over $500,000. EVERYTHING that they can legally cut is being considered. Special education can not be cut, all increases are state mandated, cuts to keep a budget balanced, in light of Spec Ed increases, must come from other regular education areas. That is NYS Ed law.
Kindergarten cuts to 1/2 day are in the THIRD PHASE or a 2.33% Contingency budget. As outlined in the budget minutes this is a $400,000 item.
****** The Board of Ed and many members of the community have asked for a 0% budget to budget increase********
All of the above would be cut. I have detailed minutes and trust me when I say it is CATASTROPHIC!!!
An additional $1.2 million would have to be cut. With a loss of over 24 teachers to such a small district, class sizes at the elementary level would be low to mid 30s and the entire district's sports program would be eliminated.
March 31 is the last budget workshop date.
The budget must be adopted by April 7th so the Board can vote on it. By law, the budget must be submitted to district lawyer's by April 18th and to the state on April 26th.
ALL TAXPAYERS IN ALL DISTRICTS vote on their local school budgets on May 17.
Unfortunately, this is not a situation unique to Seaford. Many districts are faced with catastrophic cuts. Because kindergarten is not a NYS requirement for graduation, it is on the table.
Ironically, I live in one of the districts that has never had all day kindergarten. We will pay double private kindergarten tuition for our DC's.
I have heard or seen nothing concerning the closure or rearrangement of grades in each building. There are A LOT of false rumors floating around in the community.

That's odd because our Mommy & Me leader said that Levittown may be going to START full day kindergarden in September!! It is half day now.
I asked my neighbor who teaches K in Levittown. They are going to full day K next year, they got a 2 year (or maybe it's a 3 year?) grant to pay for it.
She said there are also a lot of teacher layoffs in the district, some of whom have been teaching for 10 years.
ETA: She also said she's heard that Sachem and Huntington are looking to get rid of K completely to save money.
