*** Winter Seal Walk: Family Adventures at Jones Beach« back to calendar
Add this meeting to your calendar :
Outlook iCal Google Yahoo
When: Sunday, February 17, 2008, 10:30 AM 20080217T153000Z 20080217T163000Z Description: The Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at Jones Beach State Park is hosting a series of Winter Seal Walks. This is an excellent opportunity for those of our members with children (and those of us who might be able to borrow someone else's children) to get out and learn about some of Long Island's resident fauna.
That said, there's no reason us big kids can't participate too!
From the Web site of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation:
"Family Adventures: Meet at the Nature Center for a 1½ hour program on seals. Caravan to the fishing piers for viewing the local seals. Dress warm. 10:30 am. $3.00 per person.
"Pre-registration required."

Several of our members plan to attend the Winter Seal Walk on Sunday, February 17, 2008. Due to the "per family" pre-registration policies of the park, we will not be listing this as an official event the Nassau County Walking Meetup Group.
Still, we would still love to have other member of the Nassau County Walking Meetup Group join us!
If you anticipate being free that morning, and want to come to the event, please call the Nature Center (Phone: (516) 679-7254) to pre-register.
If you can't make it on February 17, don't fret, for this event is scheduled for additional dates through March:
* Sat, Feb 23, 1:30 p.m.
* Sat, Mar 1, 1:30 p.m. (Poetry & Seal Walk)
* Sun, Mar 2, 10:30 a.m.
* Sat, Mar 8, 1:30 p.m.
* Sat, Mar 15, 10:30 a.m.
Be sure to call the Nature Center (Phone: (516) 679-7254) to pre-register for whichever event you plan to attend. Please note that there is a $3 per person fee, charged by the Nature Center, for all Winter Seal Walk events.

Re: Seal Cruise around Jones Beach area
Yes, it is very kid-friendly.
Go to www.riverheadfoundation.org for info.
It's only a couple hours long too (boat leaves at 1 and is back by 3).
Be sure to bring binoculars. We didn't and the seals stay far away from the boat.
ETA: It's also recommended to register in advance and not just show up since the boat gets full very quickly. We showed up at 12:40 and weren't able to get a seat inside the cabin so keep that in mind as well if you have kids (it was standing room only by that point).
