Seasonal Affective Disorder

I've never been diagnosed with this or anything and I never thought about it before this year, but I noticed how much better I felt about my life every day when it was springtime and sunny and how utterly depressed I am now that it's cloudy and cold. And it's more than just "I'm blue cause it's grey"... it's really a major major change...a serious sense of dread Chat Icon

Does anyone else feel this way?

Re: Seasonal Affective Disorder

I can't relate to your symptoms, but I do believe that seasonal affective disorder is due to the number of hours of daylight, not if it is a cloudy day or sunny day or warm/cold.

A few times during the dead of winter I go to the tanning salon and it seems to help.

My friend had this in college, during the winter months she was always down--I am not sure what they did about it though!

i hear ya...but i am not sure if what you are experiencing is SAD....

I would think think that the symptoms would not be hitting you this early

it only has recently started getting a little darker ..

IMO the seasons haven't reall begunt o change that much for you to feel the difference just yet...

Could it be something else?

a phase?

no it doesn't really affect me.

do you mean now, already you are feeling this? Or when its dark, the days are shortest and its freezing cold? Cause that I have heard of...

Did anyone else hear that this year Daylight savings time is being extended 2 weeks in an effort to lengthen the day? and I guess in turn prolong this disorder from setting in that much longer?
Someone told me that....

Ooh, I am going to try that this year. I get super depressed, just don't feel like myself in the wintery cold months. I hate the change in time, I get super down. I remember posting about this actually over the past winter. And living down by the water, which is awesome in the summer doesn't help, because its so depressing over here in the winter.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have a special lamp that I turn on when I get like this.It has the same type properties that the light gives you.It really helps with that type of depression.I got it a Sharper Image.

It is very interesting how the season effects mood. You arent alone, I dont have it to extremes, but I also already notice a difference in my mood.

me too, and this also happens to me when we go through long periods of yuck weather. When I go tanning, this seems to help.

I wasn't looking for a diagnosis, just a discussion topic. Chat Icon

I think the cloudy weather and the way it's getting darker earlier is aking me dread the winter months already, because there is a lot less daylight now than there was in june.

For me personally it could be a lot of things.

I could just be bored. This is the first year in 20 years when I haven't had school, aside from when I was out sick....

Just curious if anyone else feels the change in seasons in a major way

I bought one of those full spectrum bulbs (though not at sharper image, so maybe mine isn't as good) and it just gives me a headache. My friend who went to school upstate said they HAD to get them because of the long, dark winters. I think long periods of cloudy weather do effect SAD because you hear about it more upstate where it's very cloudy most of the time in the winter, and not in FL where it's sunny almost every day
