Seasonal Hives??

Does anyone know anything about seasonal hives? I've never had hives in my life, but about 6 weeks ago I had my first outbreak. Then about 3 weeks later I got them again. I thought I figured out the culpret (generic tylenol) but I was on the train this morning and I noticed another hive on my neck. I haven't taken any medicines in WEEKS for fear of the hives coming back. Chat Icon

Now I'm trying to figure out what is going on. I know there are some people who just have sensitive skin and get hives, but I've never been one of those people. Has anyone else experianced anything like this? It's honestly driving me crazy because I never know when I'll get them!

I have an appointment with my allergy dr. tomorrow but so far he hasn't been able to give me an answer as to why this keeps happening to me.

Re: Seasonal Hives??

I am having a hive breakout right now. I am getting them from all the dust that we are stirring up from the renovations we are doing on the house.

I went to the doctor early last week and he gave me a steroid to take for 5 days which ran out on saturday, and also Zyrtec. I am supposed to take Zyrtec for 30 days. It is an AntiHistammine. Well starting two days ago during ripping up the floor in our house, the hives came back and now they are drivving me crazy.....Hopefully they will start to go away when I finish ripping the floor up on friday, and getting rid of all the garbage.

Re: Seasonal Hives??

It's so annoying isn't it?! At least you know what yours are from.. everytime I see one I freak out because I don't know what is causing this!! Plus I am constantly paranoid the next episode I have will effect my breathing!! I really hope the dr gives me some good news tomorrow when I go. He hasn't given me anything to take other than Allegra on a daily basis but obviously that isn't helping. Once I see a hive I pop a benedryl and I'm knocked off my butt 20 minutes later! Chat Icon

Been there.. done that. He told me to stop taking EVERY medicine I was taking and to try the Allegra twice a day instead of once.

Re: Seasonal Hives??

sometimes I'll just get into an allergic state, and then anything can set me off. Normally, I can eat chocolate, berries, and drink wine no problem. But if something sparks hives off in my system (weather, bug bite) I can get hives again if I eat one of those 3 things, it's wierd.

I know that's what people keep telling me but it's been almost a month since my last outbreak and I just don't understand where they are coming from. It's like I am constantly itchy!

could go up to 4-5 months....make sure that you always have a benedryl on you (put some in your car, and your wallet), and when you get them, write down everything about that day (what you ate, what perfume, if you used a new deodorant or fabric softner, etc.) eventually you'll see a pattern. I know it's annoying, but honestly it's better to try to figure it out yourself than going to allergists.

See I tried doing that.. that's when I "thought" it was the generic acetominophen, but I haven't taken it in 3 weeks! I was sitting on the train reading a magazine and I just started getting itchy. I'm so scared I'll end up getting them in my throat one day. Oh, I ALWAYS have benedryl on me now.

Thanks for all the advise everyone! Hopefully the allergist will be able to tell me SOMETHING tomorrow morning.. because I honestly feel like I am going crazy.

Re: Seasonal Hives??

Ok so I'm back.. and here's the update....

My dr. sent me for more blood tests to see if possibly the lab missed something in the first round. He knows I am insanely allergic to dust mites, so he's considering starting me on allergy shots (which I had when I was a kid for other allergies and it totally worked). Then he gave me a prescription for Zyrtec. He told me to take my Allegra in the morning, and the Zyrtec at night. Ontop of all of this, I have a sincus infection, so he gave me this antibiotic.. apparently it's the newest thing.. called Zmax? It's a liquid that you drink once and it stays in your system for 10 days killing any infections you may have.

I really hope the Zyrtec knocks whatever is going on out of my system!!

Thank you all for your advise and concern!! I will def. keep you posted on my progress! Chat Icon

Re: Seasonal Hives??

I am taking Zyrtec too. I have to take it for 30 days. My doctor gave me a Steroid that I took for the first 5 days. My problem is I am still working with what is causing my hives. I am getting them from all the dust from the renovation of our house.

Hopefully soon they will go away

Have you thought about allergy shots to cure you of your allergy to dust? Are you covering your skin and wearing a mask? Maybe that will help....
