Seasonal Allergies..
Is anyone else's DC suffering with seasonal allergies right now?
Nikolas has been sneezing NONSTOP and his eyes are so watery and red. I am guessing it is allergies with everything blooming out there, and since he doesn't have any other symptoms really it doesn't seem like a cold (no fever, coughing, etc)
Luckily he doesn't seem particularly bothered by it for the most part, a bit cranky when the sneezing fits hit but overall in good spirits. He does have that look of being tired all the time though, and just looking at him makes me think he is feeing that 'heavy headed' congested feeling..
Just wondering if anyone else noticed a difference in their children lately, and if so is there is anything we can do for them? (DS is 18 mos old)

Re: Seasonal Allergies..
I brought my DS to the dr on Monday b/c I felt he was suffering from allergies and she told me that children under 2 typically do not have allergies, however I really felt he did b/c he was tearing, sneezing and coughing. She said that he may have them and told us to get children's zyrtec. It seemed to help, but that night he got a fever so it may have been a cold-- so confusing. I just hate to seem them suffer.

Re: Seasonal Allergies..
Flee I had the same issue with Hannah last spring and my ped also said it is extremely rare (but not impossible) for child under 4 to have seasonal allergies. It turned out to be a spring cold.

Re: Seasonal Allergies..
Bella has them really bad. Last year she had a persistent cough that I had to bring her in for like three times because it sounded like bronchitis...poor thing just has a really bad post nasal drip.
My Ped says that he is very reluctant to peg this in children under 3 but it is saying that environmental allergies are becoming more and more common. Last spring and fall she was on the Singulair and this past week, I had to bring her in because it was keeping her up at night and the cough was really bad (like she was going to throw up...doc really didn't like the sound and gave me a nasal steroid spray and said if she didn't improve she may need an inhaler luckily she seems to be doing a bit better.

I would take him to an allergist.
My DD is 2 and has severe seasonal allergies. She is so allergic to the pollen in the air that it trigger's her asthma, and affects her ability to eat certain fruits and veggies.
Most doctors will tell you that it is rare for children under 3 to have enviornmental allergies - And that may be for some kids, but not for everyone.

Re: Seasonal Allergies..
wow, thanks everyone! I had no idea that seasonal/environmental allergies were so uncommon in little ones..
I guess if it lingers and/or gets worse, I will bring him into the ped.. It really doesn't seem like a cold to me at all but then again, I'm not the expert and it sounds like a few of your children started out like this only to have it develop into a cold..
I will also seriously think about bringing him to an allergist if this goes on too long with little answers from my ped (while I love my ped and trust his advice, as always it's good to be informed)
thanks all for the advice

Re: Seasonal Allergies..
oh Flee, give Niko kisses from Victoria - I hope he's not suffering too badly
I've already spoken with Victoria's ped about keeping a close eye on her and allergies with Daddy and both her godparents having the sinus surgery due to severe allergies. This is something Chris started asking his surgeon about for her before she was even born. Everyone we've spoken to so far has said it is hard to determine allergies so young - I think it's a great thing to get him checked if it doesn't seem to get any better.
