Seasonal allergies in toddlers?
BTDT moms, how old was your toddler when they started showing signs of seasonal allergies (pollen, etc)? What do you do for them?
DD (14 mos) has had a runny nose ever since everything started blooming and she has been up during the night coughing a dry cough that wakes her up. She has no fever, her nose runs much less during the day, and she's still playing and eating and being happy. But the coughing is interfering with her sleep.
TIA!

Re: Seasonal allergies in toddlers?
DS's allergist said they usually start showing up around 18 months, but it is possible that it can be earlier. She said we can try a quarter of a dose of children's zyrtec.

Re: Seasonal allergies in toddlers?
Em has had eye crust for almost a month now - i went to the doc FOR it and she said it's not 'normal' persay in her age (she was 9 months at the time) - but anything is always possible. there's not much we can do for HER....but for you maybe there is something!

Re: Seasonal allergies in toddlers?
Are you running a humidifier in her room at night? That might help ease the dry cough!! And of course (obvious but anyway) keeping her room's window closed to keep out any allergens???

Re: Seasonal allergies in toddlers?
Lauren, I tried Zyrtec but she was still up coughing after about 4 AM.
Colette, we had had a window open briefly the other day so we scrubbed her windowsill and washed everything in her room over the weekend (curtains, bedding, you name it) and vacuumed like crazy. The humidifier is blasting.
I just spoke to the ped nurse and she said we could try Benadryl so we're going to do that tonight. They want to see her in 2 days if there is no improvement.
I have terrible hayfever every spring and fall so I don't know why I'm surprised, but I hate seeing those little dark rings under her eyes in the morning

Re: Seasonal allergies in toddlers?
J you may want to try one of those "air cleaners", just run it 24/7 in her room to get rid of the allergens, pollen, etc. Hopefully the Benadryl will help but I worry that she'll have reactions throughout the season when pollen is high, etc! Has she had allergy bloodwork done??? Maybe you can schedule that with your ped to find out the *exact* irritant so you can work to control it??? Hope she feels better!!!!

Thanks C We were thinking about getting one of those ionic breeze things but I know a lot of them are BS. Can anyone recommend one that's legit?
We still have to take her for her 12 month bloodwork so maybe when we do that I can ask about allergy testing. I was never officially tested and my symptoms are controlled nicely on bad days by over the counter stuff, so I'm hoping it's just that way for her too. Every f'ing flower in Maryland opened at the end of last week and she just cut 4 teeth at once with more on the way so that's definitely not helping!!!
