Seat-belts on the school bus...
Maybe the older kids moms might know...
Do they get used ? We just had my DS pre-school trip and the 3 year olds had to have their car-seat on board and the 4 year olds didn't need one But of-course they were buckled in...
I remember being in HS and the seatbelts had just been installed, no-body wore them ( HS though) Is it enforced in elementary schools ??
I'm "hoping" to instill the importance of them in my DS, but if other kids aren't wearing them, who knows what will happen on the bus.

Re: Seat-belts on the school bus...
I personally do not understand how it is not illegal for buses to not have additional people onboard to monitor to ensure that all are wearing their seat belts. Completely blows my mind how it's not illegal. I know they have seatbelts, but you can't tell me kids wear them (we didn't as kids).
I have a serious problem with allowing my DD on a bus as it stands now.

Re: Seat-belts on the school bus...
If the child is under 4 years of age they have to ride in a carseat....if they are 4 and over, whether or not they have to wear a seatbelt, the policy regarding wearing a seat belt is set by each school district. By law, the only one required to wear a seatbelt, is the driver.
If your child is on an old school bus...I forget the manufacture date exactly..the bus may not even have seatbelts and is not required to...

Re: Seat-belts on the school bus...
You would think it would be a universal policy...
Come to think of it, unless I'm mistaken, there isnt even an age minimum to ride on the back of a motorcycle

Re: Seat-belts on the school bus...
I know the bus drivers don't have to get up and put them on. I just asked Damien if he always wears his seatbelt on the bus and he said yeah Mom, duh! At least he knows it's important

Re: Seat-belts on the school bus...
When my DD entered school in K we had the "first bus ride" for the kids and the parents got to talk to the bus safety people while the kids were taking there bus rides. I was actually surprised at what they told us. It is not mandatory for a child on the bus to wear a seatbelt. The surprising thing they told us is that it is actually more harmful to a smaller child to be restrained in a seat belt on the bus if the bus is in a crash than to not be. The reason being, is the space between the seats. If a smaller, younger child is properly restrained in a seat belt and the bus gets into a crash the child will go foward and most likely not even hit into the front seat and just fall foward being restrained only by the lap belt. This can lead to more spinal injuries. Whereas if they are not restrained and the bus gets into an accident the child will go into the back of the seat in front of them and fall back into their seat. We were told that the cushioning in the seats is designed to absorb most of the impact so this leads to less injuries. Just wanted to share what i was told, I would definitly call up your local transportation department and talk to them about the policy.

Re: Seat-belts on the school bus...
In our SD, Kindergartners are required to be belted.
http://life.familyeducation.com/school/safety/36260.html
To buckle up... The National Coalition for Seatbelts on School Buses lists the following as reasons why all large school buses should have seatbelts. (Smaller school buses that weigh less than 10,000 pounds are already required to have them.)
* If a crash occurs, the use of seat belts will reduce the probability of death and the severity of injuries to children correctly seated in school buses. * Seat belt usage improves passenger behavior and reduces driver distractions. * Seat belts offer protection against injuries in rollover or side impact crashes. * Seat belt usage in school buses reinforces good safety habits. * The cost to install seat belts is nominal.
...Or not to buckle up Opponents of seat belts on large buses disagree, saying that they are not only unnecessary, but could also be hazardous. According to the NHSTA:
* Seat belts are of no value in the majority of fatal accidents. * More children are killed around school buses -- walking to and from the school bus stop -- than inside school buses. * No data proves conclusively that seat belts reduce fatalities or injuries on school buses. * School buses are specifically designed with safety in mind. They are heavier and experience less crash force than smaller cars and trucks. School buses also have high padded seats specifically design to absorb impact. * There is no guarantee that once installed students will use seatbelts. Studies have shown that mixed and improper use of seat belts can increase the risk of injuries. * There is concern that seat belts could be used as weapons to strike or choke other passengers. * Money proposed for seat belt installation could be better spent on other safety measures.
Both sides of the debate agree that school bus transportation is one of the safest forms of travel in the U.S. -- far safer than riding in a car. Since 1984, an average of 11 passengers a year have died in school bus crashes, according to the NHSTA. The group is currently researching ways to make school buses even safer. They are accepting ideas through the end of the year.

Interesting also !!
Out of curiousity, have your children told you if most of the children do indeed wear their belts ? Meaning, does the driver or bus-aide ( if there is such ) check on them etc...???
Isn't it amazing what we think of now that we are parents! When i was going to school I would have given my mother one of these
