Secrets Capri, Excellence, , Aventura Spa Palace, or El Dorado Royale/Seaside Suites in Cancun

I've been looking to book a MUCH needed romantic getaway for our anniversary in October (if we can stand each other until then.) We would only want to do adults only. There is a very slight price difference between these resorts and was wondering what you all would reccomend.

We went to Excellence Cancun last October and loved it! I thought it was a great price.

we did Excellence for our HW and weren't impressed. You really dont get what you pay for if you go in high season.

We went to seaside suites for our Honeymoon. The resort was really pretty- very clean and VERY quiet.

Of course, we went during hurricane season and the resort had just reopened after hurricane dean (or the one before it...can't remember the name).

It is right next door to a nudist resort, but there's a guarded fence between them and you can't see over there (You are allowed to sunbathe topless at EDSS, if you're into that sort of thing). There was some sort of entertainment every night- a show or a game, but it ended pretty early (by 10:30) then there was some live music until about 1:30am.

I would definitely request one of the newer rooms. We were first put in an older room on the 3rd floor, but the toilet wasn't working, the TV wasn't working (I wanted to keep track of the other hurricane heading in our direction), and the jacuzzi in the room wasn't clean looking. So they moved us into a newer room on the 1st floor (which we had paid for anyway- Ocean Front) and it was twice the size and soooo much nicer (and closer to the lobby and restaurants)

The only things I didn't like were:

-The ocean front sits on a coral reef so you really can't swim. It is, however, great for snorkeling. We saw a ton of fish, urchins, coral etc. I'm not really a big fan of snorkeling though, I'd rather swim.

-It's a little far from everything. Playa Del Carmen is about 35 minutes away and the cab ride is $20 each way.

-The food is good, but really fancy. We couldn't wait to get home and have "real" food. LOL

-The spa isn't great at all. Very sterile feeling, like a doctors office.

Let me know if you have anymore questions!! Overall, it would be a nice romantic vacation, but I wouldn't reccommend it for a long vacation. We went for 9 nights and it was a little too long. 5-7 would be perfect.

It isn't a huge resort, and there aren't many bells and whistles, but its simple and beautiful and the staff is great!

ETA: Link to some pics (not many of the resort- but I'll upload more tonight)

we went on our hm to aventura- it was beautiful, the pools were gorgeous too- the only thing that i was disappointed in is there was no real beach- in the photos, it looked like there was a beach- but it was basically a thin layer of sand overlooking a creek- i also LOVED having a hammock on our balcony

I have been to El Dorado Royale 3 times and love everything about the resort. The staff, food, rooms are all wonderful. I would go back in a hearbeat. I have also researched Secrets Capri for a future trip and that place looks incredible as well. That is a little smaller then El Dorado Royale. Have fun!Chat Icon
