Security cameras around a home.
Do you think of it as a crime/theft deterrent or more of a 'hey, we clearly have shit to hide up in here!' thing?
Just curious what people think about this topic, as there are lots of people with them (or, dummy ones) in my area.

I think it's a crime/theft deterrent. Most of the home break ins are done by young drug addicts. It's an obstacle they do not wish to have to get around.
I feel like only a professional thief would look more into it as there is more to steal and they would most likely have the skills to bypass them.

Re: Security cameras around a home.
My husband owns a security camera business, and honestly I don;t know what I did before without them. I like that i get to see and know whats going on outside my house...police look for meighbors with cameras should anything happen to a neighbors home or on the street. They are definitely a detterent because who wants to be on camera...cant claim innocent when you have video.

Re: Security cameras around a home.
My DH owns a Security Camera company as well, and its a deterrent, but even though places have camera's people will still commit crimes, just makes it a lot easier to catch

Re: Security cameras around a home.
for me it's a deterrent. Think about it if the person has a choice between two homes, they are more likely to pick the house with one less thing to worry about.

Re: Security cameras around a home.
depends.
Mostly I think they are fake and posing.
Some areas I feel they are legit and nearly every home has them hidden or in plain sight. Others places I see them and think "wow cheap knock offs"
My Aunt's neighbor has been broken into 3 times in the past 12mo. The last time with the 'cameras' up. I asked what happened given that she also has had an alarm all year. She 'forgot' to turn the cameras on and she didn't set the alarm.

Re: Security cameras around a home.
I think it can be a deterrent.
I don't think it tells theves that there is something there to get. Mainly my reasoning is, a lot of people have security systems who really don't have nice stuff. there are many paranoid people who think they need a security system/camera when there is very little real need, with little to protect at least in the way of stuff.
my father put/is putting a camera in his house, I can see he's getting older and apparently the media has hyped up some door push ins............ and maybe it makes some sense. I don't think i'm going to do it. My wife is home all day and she bolts the door, and can see through the window. I feel consistantly locking the door is a better precaution than a security camera.
