When do you seed the lawn in the Fall for next year?

Re: Seeding lawn in the Fall
They just did a segment on our local CBS radio on this very topic this past weekend. They say the time to seed is right now while the soil is still warm. The gist is that the new seed will sprout now in the warm soil, filling in any burnt out patches from the summer heat and have time to get good strong roots before the winter. If you seed in the spring or later fall, the ground is more likely to be cool or wet, both of which lead to rotting seed.
Link to an article the reporter did on the topic.

Good to know! I thought I had to seed later and it will germinate in the Spring.

IT's EXPENSIVE!
Go to Scotts.com and sign up for newsletter, they give you $5.00 coupon.... (at least they did in the spring/ summer)

Isn't the EZ seed for quick patches? I am looking for overseeding over an existing lawn.
I have the seeds already.

Re: Seeding lawn in the Fall
maybe a stupid question, but are you just suppossed to spread the seeds around.
Or do you have to rake them in, or aerate the soil now and then seed?

You are supposed to losen up the soil a bit with a rake first.

Re: Seeding lawn in the Fall
So our lawn has patches of crabgrass. One of our neighbors said that the crabgrass would die over the winter.
So given that how would you handle seeding the lawn in the Fall?
any advice?

That's correct crabgrass will die off during the winter. Are you seeding over a lawn now? If so a good turf builder will work wonders on your lawn... Scotts Turf Builder or Scotts Winter fertilizer

This is "my" understanding.
You seed either in the Fall or Spring.
Weeds will die this Winter and the new lawn you seed in the Fall is supposed to take over the bare spots. In the Spring you will use a weed killer type. You usually cannot use both a weed killer and overseed for at least 3 month apart. So you seed now in the Fall and use the weed killer in early Spring. You also need to fertilize in the Fall. The concept is to grow a nice lawn to prevent weeds.

I'm from the West Coast so it's different because we don't have a Fall like here. But that's correct weed killer in the spring, I used Scotts Tuff builder plus halts. That stuff stopped the crabgrass from coming back and help that grass fill in and turn nice and dark green...

Re: Seeding lawn in the Fall
Do it this weekend! It's recommended to do it before it gets cold where the grass get frosty over night. We are going to have some warm weather this weekend which will help it seep into the soil!

So let me get this right… I leave the crabgrass there and place seeds over the crabgrass now (ie. Before the frost this Fall) And then I fertilize in the spring?

It's called Starter Fertilizer by Scotts. Don't use their regular one, it's too strong...

Don't worry about it now, just use the winter fertilize for now and turf builder plus hauls in the spring. The Crabgrass will die off on it's own...

You can't use a weed killer and seed at the same time. There is usually a wait of at least 3 weeks for some weed killer before you seed.
So seed.
Check the fertilizer. Some you can use around the same time as seeding.
You usually fertilize more than once per year.
I do organic so for me it's 3-4 times per year.
Spring Early Summer Summer Fall
But I can do also just Spring, Summer and Fall

You use a weed preventer/crabgrass preventer in early Spring.

Ah, ok. The posts here just made it seem like they went away on their own Should we do that before seeding the bare parts of thee lawn? (and thus wait until next year to seed?)

They usually do die in the Winter. You cannot use a weed killer and seed at the same time. That's why you seed in the Fall and use a weed killer in the Spring.
