Seeing Vs. Hearing Heartbeat

I've read that many woman's Ob's attempted to see AND hear the heartbeat at their 1st appt. Mine did not - we only saw it (which I am still thrilled about)....I think it is b/c their equipment may have been a little old but I really didn't ask. She told me that next time closer to 12 weeks is when they try to hear it when the OB does an external (she was a NP).

Anyone else's doc's do it this way?

I didn't hear it until 12 weeks either. I saw it at the first 2 sonos, then both heard and saw it at the 12 week, then my 16 week was no sono, but we heard it on the doppler.

Herd it on Monday - only7wks. It was loud. Maybe it was the equipment.

Re: Seeing Vs. Hearing Heartbeat

We didn't hear the heartbeat till like 12-14 weeks. We did see it at like 6 1/2 weeks at the first appointment though.

Re: Seeing Vs. Hearing Heartbeat

Most wait until at least the 8 week mark to put the sound on to hear the HB.

I heard their heart beats once at 7 weeks because they thought I needed a D&C.

They wouldn't let me hear it again until 12 weeks. Although I did see it at every appt on sono.

Re: Seeing Vs. Hearing Heartbeat

I'm 14 weeks and I still haven't heard it with the doctors machine. I have a cheap home doppler and have heard it with that. I'm not sure why my OB didn't turn the sound on. I'm assuming it was their machine. I go on Nov 3 and they said it was a regular OB visit so no sonogram just the doppler.

You don't really hear the heart with a doppler. The machine makes a noise that corresponds with what it sees. So once you see the heart beat... you essentialy hear it. The external doppler is the same idea, but less complex... so you hear it instead of seeing it.

BTW you can really hear the heartbeat with a stethoscope at about 15 weeks.

I saw the HB for the first time at 6w3d (just a flicker).

I heard it for the first time at my ultrascreen - I was able to see and hear with the hospital's equipment.

They were unable to use the doppler to hear thet HB until I was 16w - and it was difficult because DS would move the second they put it on my belly.

At 5 weeks 6 days, we got to see te heartbeat. They said they are able to hear it, but this early they don't turn the sound on...I have no idea why...I am hoping at my next sono we will hear it too!

We heard the HB at 6w6days. I think we were supposed to see it also, but I didn't see anything, I think I was so overwhelmed by the whole thing and the sound that I just couldn't focus. I felt like that Friends episode where Rachel pretends to see her baby!
