Self feeders -DC with too much food in their mouth and letting YOU in to get the food
Does your DC let you in with your finger if you have to get something out, such as too much food?
Do you think it's wise to retrieve too much food or let them chew it? I am afraid in struggling that I will push the food back, making the situation worse.

Usually if they put too much in their mouths, they will gag on it and stick out their tongues, at which point I will take it from them.
Sometimes if I see they are putting too much in, I can quickly go in and grab it before it gets all chewed up.
ETA: now I only give them small amounts of food at a time so we avoid this situation altogether.

Do they ever struggle? My DD won't let me in barely at all. She throws a fit and cries. It's partly b/c I never really go in there. I use a toothbrush, not even my finger so she is not used to that. I am going to try a bit everyday to get her used to it b/c if I had to get in there, she just won't let me.

I do too but I am trying to start to give her larger things to bite off of, to teach her. Otherwise, I break everything up. So today I gave her a wagon wheel to bite off of, to practice with a larger item. Went great until the end, the last peice was pretty large and she popped it in and would NOT let me get in to get it. Luckily she chewed it up but I panicked.

Its a struggle. She likes to feed herself, especially breads. So she'll grab a roll and eat it like an apple. She gets it stuck on the top of her mouth. I have to go in and fish it out.
She HATES it
I have the same fear you do and I do try to limit her foods but really she HAS to learn how much is just too much.
She took a shrimp from me and chewed it up and got it stuck on the roof of her mouth too. She bit ME as I got it out!

See, I used to do this, but I stopped. Since they got teeth they will bite off huge chunks of stuff. We've had some near-choking incidents, so that was the end of me giving them large pieces of anything. I'll only do it if its something thats easily dissolvable - like a baby mum mum, or a cracker, etc. I wouldn't worry about something like a wagon wheel, those aren't very big to begin with and dissolve easily. I'm talking about stuff like pickles, bread, etc.

Right! That's why I used a wagon wheel in case of this. I would only use something dissolveable at this point but it was still pretty large!

My fear is just pushing it back in the back of her throat, vs letting her chew it up herself. So thats my debate but I dont plan on putting myself in these situations too often at this point. My heart can't handle it. But I want her to learn how to handle larger amts of food. The other night she shoved a half of a slice of cheese in her mouth, I wanted to see what she woudl do so I left it on the plate. Luckily I grabbed it right out of her mouth that time.
