September/October Mommies...
I know Emily is right on target with her physical development...she's standing on her own without holding on, cruising all over the place, dancing, etc.
I'm wondering how all the babies are doing with their speech development. As a teacher I kind of obsess over this.
Right now she says all of the following, although some of them like big bird and sasha only happen occasionally)
-Momma -Dadda -Baabaa -Bye Bye (when she waves) -Babe (baby when she points to her babies in her books and on magazines) -Dat (that -- does this when she points) -Bi Bur (big bird when we read her Elmo book and when he comes on TV, but this is occasionally, not every day) -asha (sasha, my BIL's dog)
What are your babies saying? When do they start saying "phrases?"

Re: September/October Mommies...
Right now Talia is saying
Dada (my dad...I guess she hears me call him this) Abba (hebrew word for dad) Mom mom (me!) Dog Dop (Stop) Dat (That) Nana (we dont know what this is - we have narrowed it down to grandma or banana - I think its banana)
I have also heard Hi No (GREAAAAAAAAT!) and Turkey oh and if you ask her what a dog says she sticks out her tongue and pants.
eta: I found this on the net
By 12 months, most children will:
understand their own name understand words like "bye-bye' or "up" say sounds like "ba ba, no no, go go" laugh and try to make sounds like you do
By 15 months, most children will: take turns making sounds say 2 or 3 words, but not clearly understand "no" and shake their head reach or point to something they want while making a sound understand simple questions or directions like "where is your nose?", "show me your shoe

Re: September/October Mommies...
She doesn't say any phrases. Here's where we're at...
Mama Dada Baba C*ock (clock) Quock (this means duck and I think comes from quack quack) Bo (book) Huhwa (means hello, but she's only said this when she picks up her toy telephone)
If there's anymore I can think of...I'll be back...
I knew I'd think of another... wo-wo (dog..woof woof) no-no

Re: September/October Mommies...
So far Ava says Mama Dada Neika (our cat) What's that Book Ball baby Hi hi guys bye baba boo gampa (grandpa) phew (when she wants us to smell her feet)
At this age its not only important what he/she says expressively but also their receptive language...this is language that they understand but might not say yet....which of course leads to expressive language. For example, Ava can identify facial features by pointing but she can't say those words yet. She can also understand simple directions like give mommy the shoe or give kiss ect. She also knows various other things in the house (by pointing to them)if I ask her but she can't say those words yet.
I obsess over her development too Melissa.....I used to teach early intervention so I still have all my testing materials that we used for evals. I look at it all the time to make sure Ava is on target. i should throw it away because i make myself nuts!

Don't panic! I've actually read in many places that boys are a bit slower when it comes to communicating verbally. Christopher only says a handful of things and he's 13 months.

Don't worry. I've seen it happen first hand with my two. Boys are slower at talking. Especially for the extremely physically active. Usually they walk or talk first.

So true. Andrew hardly had 10 words at 18 months. By 22 months, his vocabulary exploded. Now at 27 months, he can speak to me in sentences. He told me today "no milk, it makes my bottom hurt from poopy" (this is because he has severe diaper rash and he overheard me telling DH to slow him down on the milk because it might play a part in it).

Well, Bella has A LOT to say, but other than Mama, Dada, and Baba, lord knows what it all is...but she babbles on like no other...she could be reciting the World Book and I would have NO idea!
She definitely understands a lot and shakes her head no when she certainly doesn't want something...but when she is told no, she crinkles up her nose into a huge smile, like that's gonna work...typical woman!

Re: September/October Mommies...
well as you all know or know now my first is Autistic(aspergers) so he was pretty short on words in the beginning years, my second had a major speech problem and you couldn't even make out mama or dada until he was almost 3 (he's perfectly normal now) spencer is 9 months and JUST started saying Mama and Dada, also says Nana and Baba (which was his first word) and something that sounds like car which i don't know if he means car or col which is what we call my son colin for short.

Logan says the same things....no REAL words. I remember a friends son said nothing but grunting for a year and a half and now he's 10 and speaks fine. I've heard too that boys are slower than girls in this department.

Re: September/October Mommies...
Hmmm... well I think Alex is confused because we interchange between Mommy, Mama, Ema, Dadda, Daddy and Aba... she has said Aba and Dada but no Mama yet... but she babbles up a storm, it's incredible! And she does say Daaaaa (Dog) while pointing to Sparky... she understands a lot though, she definitely responds to her name and she understands NO, though I can tell you, she doesn't like it!
Being the paranoid mommy that I am, I looked up the developmental milestones for 12 months from the American Pediatric Association - here they are:
Developmental Milestones by the End of 12 Months
For purchasing or reprint information, click here. Social and Emotional
Shy or anxious with strangers Cries when mother or father leaves Enjoys imitating people in his play Shows specific preferences for certain people and toys Tests parental responses to his actions during feedings. (What do you do when he refuses a food?) Tests parental responses to his behavior. (What do you do if he cries after you leave the room?) May be fearful in some situations Prefers mother and/or regular caregiver over all others Repeats sounds or gestures for attention Finger-feeds himself Extends arm or leg to help when being dressed Movement
Reaches sitting position without assistance Crawls forward on belly Assumes hands-and-knees position Creeps on hands and knees Gets from sitting to crawling or prone (lying on stomach) position Pulls self up to stand Walks holding on to furniture Stands momentarily without support May walk two or three steps without support Language
Pays increasing attention to speech Responds to simple verbal requests Responds to "no" Uses simple gestures, such as shaking head for "no" Babbles with inflection Says "dada" and "mama" Uses exclamations, such as "Oh-oh!" Tries to imitate words Cognitive
Explores objects in many different ways (shaking, banging, throwing, dropping) Finds hidden objects easily Looks at correct picture when the image is named Imitates gestures Begins to use objects correctly (drinking from cup, brushing hair, dialing phone, listening to receiver) Developmental Health Watch
Each baby develops in his own manner, so it's impossible to tell exactly when your child will perfect a given skill. Although the developmental milestones will give you a general idea of the changes you can expect as your child gets older, don't be alarmed if his development takes a slightly different course. Alert your pediatrician if your baby displays any of the following signs of possible developmental delay in the 8- to 12-month age range.
Does not crawl Drags one side of body while crawling (for over one month) Cannot stand when supported Does not search for objects that are hidden while he watches Says no single words ("mama" or "dada") Does not learn to use gestures, such as waving or shaking head Does not point to objects or pictures
