Setting up a home network

I got a new router...and I'm trying to set up my home network, but I'm not having any luck.

I have 2 laptops, both wireless cards. They both can get on the internet. the only wire I have plugged in, is the cable modem to the router. I want to be able to see the "my documents" folder from either of the two so I can share my documents. I also want to be able to print from each of them to the printer.

I have enabled sharing the the properties of both folders. I ran through the network wizard, but I cannot see the other computer.

Can anyone offer suggestions of anything I can try?

In order to be able to print from both computers you need a wireless printer router.

Do you have the windows firewall on?

Unfortunately, Windows XP home's file sharing is a little more klugey than Windows XP professional. Sharing 'My Documents' is a little more difficult due to the fact that 'my documents' is based on your profile and permissions are only for the user you logged in as.

Here is a Microsoft link that explains how to setup file sharing.

I don't know a whole lot about networks, but I do remember DH saying that one computer needed to be boss. You have to make one the main computer.

My computer has the printer and it has to be on for him to print. It is done through the network, no wireless printer like a previous poster said. Couldn't tell you how DH did it though.

There are multiple ways to deal with the printing issue - you can either make the machine with the printer directly attached a 'print server' or, buy a wireless print server device that one of the above responders suggested. Linksys manufacturers a wireless print server device that works pretty well.

For sharing files, there are ways to setup file sharing without setting up a domain (where you have a 'master' computer and 'slaves'); I posted the info in the above post.

Best case scenario is a domain, but that is overkill for home usage. I'm a network engineer, and I couldnt be bothered doing either method for home. I have a USB Hard drive I use for backups, and I move any files I want to share on there and move to the next computer; since our need for file sharing is low and the USB drive method works just fine.
