Re: Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

what I remember about my sex ed was what I learned from school.

I vaguely remember mom speaking to me about this.

I think I was pretty educated about sex. Now having said that, I don't sex ed is the be all for everyone. Some still don't get it or care and do what they want.

For those that said school, I'm curious to know why?

Doesn't sex education fall in the lines of values that are taught to someone? Same lines of religions, politics, etc...?

Some people think that way... that educating kids about sex is going to make them have it more. Or giving them access to condoms is going to. The fact is most kids are going to have sex no matter what you tell them. They need to be taught how to protect themselves.
You can and SHOULD teach your kids morals at home just like religion. Chat Icon

I never would have learned morals at school.

I never would have learned about contraception at home.

They both add up!

school, b/c it would most likely be uniform, mandated and scientifically based.

To this point, I think this is exactly why it should be both.

Schools should teach kids the "scientific" side of things, while I believe parents should teach children the "morality" side of it.

It's not the school's place to teach morality (since everyone's feelings are different) but I do believe they should teach kids the facts about sex, STDs (and I DON'T mean Save The Date cards Chat Icon) and anything else that may fall under that category.

I may get flamed for this but in my situation it would have been better for me to learn at school to learn about it the RIGHT way.

ITA. My mother decided to have "the talk" with me on my way home from my college graduation. Too little too late was the phrase I responded with LOL

My sister got the talk the night before her wedding ( at age 27 )and she SAVED me by telling my mom that she would be the one to explain everything to me.

My parents are from a different world, and I love them for it LOL

I believe it should be taught at home - I don't know how much more responsibility we have to place on teachers....

At what point do we start it in schools if kids are having sex at the ages of 10/11 now? Not just in High School?

You can't rely on parents to give kids the unbiased EDUCATION they NEED - parents are going to teach their kids based on their own beliefs and values, which I believe a child needs, but they also need the FACTS ........which is why it should be both -

I voted at home but both would be ideal.

At home, I think it's the parents responsibility to teach morals/values along with consequenses, love, etc. It will also open the topic so their children know they can ask questions or discuss issues they are having. If parents can't talk about it, how can they expect their children to go to them when they really need to?

I think schools should teach the health aspect - pregnancy, birth control, disease, etc.

Re: Sex Education - In Schools or In Home?

in school. because parents may feel uncomfortable talking to their kids about sex, contraceptives and STDs, i think a child will learn more if they take a class taught by a professional who won't leave anything out because it's too "icky" to talk about.

i personally don't think i will have an issue talking to my kids about safe sex but who knows if i'll forget something important and leave it out of the discussion? at least with a curicculum, (mostly) everything is covered.
