Shamrocks new bad habit

He has decided that he likes eat the carpet. The carpet is old, worn in areas and loose in spots around the corners. He has found that this fun to try to rip it up and chew on itChat Icon
I have tried 'No" and "bad" and it has gotten to the point of yelling at him (which I dont like doing). It is getting so frustrating. I have tried bitter apple but he seems to like that.

What can I do? I already have 1/2 my wall paper in the kitchen ripped off- I dont want holes in the carpet.

BTW- He is 9 months old- is this still a stage?

Still definitely a stage, but a hard one to break. Is he crated during the day while you're at work? If not, you're probably going to have to start doing that. When Lucy used to eat the couch (she ate an entire attached cushion) we'd put her in her crate in a time out if we caught her. Just for a few minutes. I know a lot of people say the crate shouldn't be used as punishment, but it's always worked well for us. She still loves her crate and goes in there all the time of her own volition. She's since grown out of the couch eating phase, but she still scratches it with her nails to fluff it up and make it more comfy. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes he is still crated while we are at work. He is doing this in front of us. When I catch him doing it and I tell him no he will just look at me at then keep doing it untill I get up to go to him and then he darts in and out under the dining room table. Its driving me crazy!

Oh and Shammy also "fluff's" up the couch/bed before he sleeps also.Chat Icon

Doesn't it make you twice as mad when they do it right in front of you? I was holding a slice of pizza in my hand last night while talking to DH and Lucy came over and licked it. It was in my HAND! Chat Icon I dropped that pizza and she RAN for the crate. Chat Icon

Anyway, I digress. Chat Icon I would start putting him in the crate for a few minutes when he's bad. That's the only way I can possibly think of. I know they say to tell them to stop and then give them something they CAN chew on, but I dunno, that feels like a reward for bad behavior to me so I don't like to do that.

I feel the same way. I tried doing that and I think knows now if he is chewing on something he shouldnt or has something in his mouth that he shouldnt have that he will be getting a "treat" or toy. My dog is way too smart for his own good. I will try the crate thing (if I can catch him) and see if that works.

I'm a big spray bottle threatener - I've only used it like 5 times in her whole life but if Maggie sees the bottle she runs

Re: Shamrocks new bad habit

Pet stores sell sprays that deter dog from chewing. Theyre supposed to taste bad to dogs. Our dog used to chew her beds but now we spray her bed when we first give it to her and any time we wash it and she doesn't chew it any more.

Re: Shamrocks new bad habit

My Mom's old dog was a big chewer. There were literally holes in the sheetrock where she would chew the wall while she was in her cage...you moved the cage out of the way to vacuum under there and you saw the gnawing on the sheetrock with the crate marks inbetween. It was ridiculous.

She also chewed on the feet of the dining room table, the china cabinet, buffet, etc. And everything else. It was a bad habit!

My Mom had to make up a mixture of tobasco sauce and water to brush onto everything, and eventually it did work. The vet suggested this since bitter apple spray did NOTHING! It did not stop the dog from chewing.

So my Mom mixed water with tobasco sauce and would use a paintbrush to brush that into the areas that the dog would chew.

Not sure how that would work for a rug, but maybe you can figure out something.

I would call the vet first to ask about the tobasco sauce since I don't remember the ratio that my Mom used, this was years ago!

Another thing to think of, too, is that maybe he's chewing because he has pent up energy. Trust me, I KNOW how hard it is to take your dogs for a long walk (try it with TWO!), but I've found it's doubly necessary in the first two years. The more tired your pup is, the less destructive things he'll do!

ITA... I get so mad at all the things Sam and Lilah ate...rugs, electrical cords, cameras, remotes, purses, shoes...
We started taking them up to the dog park 2-3x a week.. and then long azz walks and the chewing did subside ...

trust me - it still happens on occasion
but usually its when DH and I get lazy and the kids get restless...
