Share your Home made Baby Food Recipes

Okay so I want to start planning ahead for DS, he will start eaitng veggies in 2 weeks and Fruits in about 3 weeks.

I want to make my own food at home, but not sure what to make???

I just read an article in Babycenter that says you have to be careful about the amount of Nitrates in your homemade baby food, apperently this is found in certain veggies and its not good for DC
It says that all store bought baby food must have very low levels of nitrate, So I am confused as to what is safe to prepare at home

So if you don't mind sharing your receipes.

TIA

We use "Super baby food" by Ruth Yaron and follow the schedule she outlines. In the beginning everythin g is puree. She suggests organic.

Carrots, I believe, have the most nitrates so we haven't introed those even though Gerber has them as a first foodChat Icon Chat Icon

Yes that is one of the veggies I read that DS should stay away form, also spinach & squash.

Re: Share your Home made Baby Food Recipes

Actually winter squash is phased in at 6 months old, according to the book. We only feed organic fruits and vegetables

I just made a batch this morning of butternut squash. Halved it and place in the oven to bake for an hour. Then scooped it out, always remove the seeds first before baking, put it in the blender with water to make the puree. Filled 5 ice-cube trays of puree. When they are frozen, I pop them out into a large ziplock and label with the date. I won't be introducing it for four more days as we just started papaya this morning.

I think it took me, hands on 20 minutes. That's faster than driving to the store and a whole lot cheaper than pre-made food, even if you use organic only.

The first veg she recommends is sweet potato.
We were doing 5 cubes of sweet potato to one cube of avacado for a while now while I introduced fruits in the morning.

FYI: My friend followed this three years ago with her daughter and she wound up buying many of the fruits pre-made. To do the fruits is a bit more work as you really have to cook them down first and need a food processor for some to get the strings out (choking hazard). For example, I'm not going to cook down apples when I can just buy organic, non-sweetened apple sauce.

We are on month 6 and next week will switch to the whole grain, homemade cereal she makes.

There are a lot of other tips in the book... toddler meals, craft projects for when they get older.

Definitely worth picking up.

ETA: A lot of the Gerber choices of food and when to add them are contrary to what she advocates. She has done her research and tells you why each food should be introduced when it is.
