She is only 9 weeks old and Gracie has a virus (UPDATED 7/21)
She has been sick since Sunday afternoon. She had a fever of 101.5 then it went to 98.9, 100.6, 99.9, 101.3, 99.7, 100.5, and on and on like this for the past two days. I took her to the ped yesterday and this AM she was up at 4AM screaming with a 101.3 fever and when I called this Am they told me to come right in. They took her temp (99.9 at their office) and gave her a urine and blood test. It is a viral infection.
I have been neurotic about people using purell before they touch her, no kids coming near her, keeping everything clean, etc. What is the deal???? I feel like a horrible mom because all I can do is nurse her, keep her in an air conditioned house, and give her tylenol. She is barely eating and when she does 1/2 of it gets spit up. The ped said to try to feed her and keep her as hydrated as possible. I know I am doing what I can do to help her, I am just frustrated and my heart aches because she is so uncomfortable.
Has anyone else had this happen when their kids were so young?? I need some reassurance here. TIA
eta: on a good note, she gained one pound in 11 days since we started supplementing my breastfeding with formula. The ped said her weight was on the low end of normal when I was EBF'ing, so I am happy she gained.
UPDATE(7/21): The fever went away and then came back last night . So, she has had fevers on and off since Sunday afternoon and the ped wants her to come in again today, that is 3X's in one week. They did a blood culture and a urine sample and both came up viral. What else can it be??? I am really starting to get very concerned.
Has anyone else's child had a fever for five days when they were 9-10 weeks old????? I am freaking out over here. TIA
UPDATE (7/21@ 12:20PM): We are back from the doctor and they are pretty certain she has roseola (sp). They did blood work and another urine sample, which still showed up viral. With roseola you get a fever that goes up and down for 5-6 days and then a red rash all of your body. It is contagious only to babies and adults usually get a cold from it. Which BTW, I now have.
She does not have coxsackie because she had no blisters and with coxsackie her fever would have been higher than 101.5. Thanks for all the responses and well wishes ladies!

Re: She is only 9 weeks old and Gracie has a virus
Thanks Ladies I am feeling a little guilty about the supplementing. I keep asking myself, if I EBF the entire time she would she have gotten sick? I know that is not true that BF and formula fed babies all get sick sooner or later, I just feel like maybe I could have done something to prevent this. The doctor told me that supplementing was a good thing because she is gaining now, and that she could have gotten this if I did EBF the entire time.
I know I need to snap out of it and gain some perspective, I just feel like I wish I could do more to heal her. Thanks for listening ladies, you are all THE BEST!

Don't feel that way! Sometimes babies just get sick! BF or not!!! Just look after her, stay cool...and take care of yourself!

Dina,
Karissa had a virus at 8 1/2 weeks so I know how you feel. I was also neurotic about germs and it didn't do us any good. I will just pray that it goes away quickly and that you don't get sick ( bc I did!). The best advice is to just love her with all of your heart bc you can't take the virus away.
Thinking of you guys!

Re: She is only 9 weeks old and Gracie has a virus
Thanks ladies! I feel so much better reading all of your responses. Sometimes you just need someone to tell you that everything will be OK and that you are doing a good job as a mommy.
I am happy to report that Gracie's fever has not reared its ugly head in 3 hours and she kept the last two feedings down. I pray that this is the beginning of the end of this virus.

Aw! I feel for you but youre not a bad Mom, you can do everything "right" and still they can pick up something. My son was just sick @ 6 weeks old. We had a few ER visits and alot of pediatrician visits but he is on the mend now. The most important thing at this age is the hydration. We supplemented him with Pedialyte per my pediatrician's direction, he wasnt keeping anything down. He had bronchiolitis so he was also viral. Its so hard b/c theres really nothing to do as far as medicine goes, it just has to run its course.

Was she around anyone who was sick at all?
Damien gets fevers that come and go, it is very frustrating, especially the first time when they make you get all the blood work done I hope she is feeling better real soon
