Sherri Shepherd: "I Had More Abortions Than I Would Like to Count"

In the new issue of black Christian women's magazine Precious Times, The View's Sherri Shepherd reveals that her life was once so rough she didn't care if she died.

"My sister was heavy into drugs, and we would have to go and get her from crack houses," Shepherd, 41, says.

At the time, the stand-up comic — then a Jehovah's Witness – was "in a very physically abusive relationship," she said. "I was sleeping with a lot of guys and had more abortions than I would like to count."

She said her self-esteem became so low, "I felt if someone killed me, it wouldn't even make a difference."

But after converting to Christianity, she said, "God showed me that it would make a difference."

(Shepherd has also said she relied on her faith to get through her split with husband Jeff Tarpley, father of their 3-year-old son. During their seven-year marriage, Tarpley cheated on her and got another woman pregnant.)

Still, Shepherd admitted it is tough talking religion on the popular ABC chat-fest. (She received criticism after she once remarked that ancient Greeks persecuted Christians, even though Christ hadn't been born yet.)

"Oh, sometimes I say, 'Lord, Juanita Bynum or Joyce Meyer would be so good at this table. They could lay hands on Barbara Walters and get her saved,'" she said.

"I ask the Lord, 'Why am I here?'" Shepherd added. "I have to trust God when He says, 'Because I said so.'"

Wow...in this instance I think some things are best left private. What does she hope to gain from divulging this piece of information. Its not like she is going to help anyone by admitting to several abortions. Some celebrities are just plain strange.

I really don't get why she would announce that to the world either.. it does kind of change my opinion of her.. the whole topic seems like something that should be kept private to me..

I think she's just trying to say no matter how bad things get and how low you are you can find a way out.

And that way out for her was God.

If that knowledge helps even one person, then good for her for sharing.

Doesn't change my opinion of her at all.

Interesting that she has shared this...however I don't t hink any different of her b/c I don't think you can truely judge someone unless you've walked a mile in their shoes.

I just watched on You Tube when they discussed the article that came out. She said she made peace with herself when a woman said to her Sherri, when you get to heaven all your babies are going to be there.” Her saying that makes me sad to think about what a horrible thing she did over and over again b/c she couldnt keep her legs closed

I think she's in a happier place now and was trying to show how bad things can really get and how you can make it out ok. I still think it was done in a harsh manner, and I wouldn't be surpirsed if she loses fans, but I take it for what its worth, who the hell amI to judge, we all have skeltons.

I really have no words to describe my disgust - like its no bigg deal to have an abortion. Gross!

I think this is totally out of context. I saw her explain it on the show. She said she lived with the guilt for many years. One days someone told her that her babies were in heaven waiting for her. She wasn't saying oh who cares... I had this many abortions blah blah blah. She was saying she did it and she was not happy with her self after it. This woman helped her live with the "mistakes" she made years ago.


Really who is anyone to judge what she does with her life.

I believe she later had infertility, and had to have medical help to conceive her son. I wonder if it had to do with her abortions? Wow,I am shocked. I really like her and I am shocked to hear her say this.
