Re: Shooter caught in Charleston shooting spree

I keep thinking of these innocent victims. And how the state still flies a confederate flag, how the people still have re enactments where they say the south will rise again. This is not to mean all southern people will have great houses and jobs, is it? No, it really is that those who espouse those feelings are saying let's rise up and have it back like it was in the 1700-1800s. This murderer was raised with those ideals. Not treating people as human beings, not treating people equally. The fact that he could sit in that church and listen for an hour, what does that say about how deranged he is? He espoused about rape, but killed a lot of women. He is a twisted, despicable, excuse. I keep thinking bout the people who were murdered. They should have been safe. My heart cries for all of them.

I was just thinking this myself.
My heart aches for the family of the murdered innocent. Saw a few pieces of interviews with family members and I was so angry.

This POS isn't good enough to be called an animal. He is a deranged lunatic who comes from a family of HATE and I could bet you a lot of "Not My Son, Not my kid". His insanity swept under the rug by words like "he was bullied or he's misunderstood".
Loner? No. I say he's the devil himself.

I hope the families are able to find peace in knowing this psycho will hopefully never see the light of day again so he can never hurt another soul.

I read his friends didnt really think he was racist even though he constantly made racist "jokes" - they thought it was just "southern pride"

I attended the College of Charleston - this is about 4 blocks from the college, 2 from my dorm, and one of the women was a librarian at the college.....I seriously left Charleston bc I could not stomach how overtly racist people were but called it "southern pride." The "good 'ole boy" culture down there is INSANE and no one sees anything wrong with it. I couldnt make sense of it, I felt like I was the crazy one....I was like "DOES NO ONE ELSE SEE THIS????"

Seriously.....it is THE SOLE reason I left.

I dont think hes mentally ill, I think he is evil and I think he has a lot of hate, but I dont think hes insane. There are SO many more like him down there....SO SO many. Not all, obviously, but SO many.

Also...I want to point out...claiming his "hate" is mental illness is just a way for white privilege to justify his actions, but also does a HUGE disservice to the mentally ill populations itself. We cannot allow the media to lump the mentally ill in with a hatemonger like Dylann Roof...he had the mental capacity to premeditate a hate crime of this nature.

Using race as a basis for hate - our nation's culture of ignorance.

"In considering the senseless loss of nine lives in Charleston, of course racism jumps out as the main issue. But isn’t ignorance at the root of racism? And it’s true that the bloodshed is a reflection of America's violent, gun-crazed culture, but it is only our aversion to reason as a society that has allowed violence to define the culture. Rational public policy, including policies that allow reasonable restraints on gun access, simply isn't possible without an informed, engaged, and rationally thinking public."

He is insane. Period. He is also a racist. The two are not the same. There are plenty of sane racists and insane people without an ounce of hate in their beings.
Charles Manson was able to premeditated his crimes and bring people along for the ride. He is not sane.
No one said his insanity was an excuse for his hate crime. Get over your self already.

He is insane. Sane people don't kill or harm others. Sane people find ways of dealing with their emotions that do not involve guns. He could have hated Jews, Italians, Latinos, or Musli s and done this to that group and I'd feel the same way. He's a crazy and hate filled person.

My college roomie was from SC. Basically this area. We had a great relationship but she would call us Yankees and the first time I was literally like what? The Yankees that play baseball? She said she never knew Italian or Jewish people and I was like oh hello, welcome to NYC! Like diverse melting pot with plenty of Italians and Jews. She was so so sheltered.

Years later she was dating a guy who was of another ethnic group aka not blonde hair blue eyes and we would always laugh like her dad is probably dying. I think NYC did her good to break out of this weird bubble.

I don't think anyone who walks into a church if all places and shoots 9 random people is sane

Walking into
A church and shooting 9 people simply bc of their race is racist. And for me he is still insane.

Idk what white privilege is but for me I can say me thinking he is insane in no way justifies his actions

Wow. I think that's all I can really say to this comment. This comment is the very crux of what she is getting at. Bravo for the example.

This isn't about sticking on the side of your own race, which is what I think you are trying to get at with your little comment there. All of us, no matter what colour we are, need to keep talking about this. This needs to be talked about.

I'll just leave you with two articles that I found interesting. Perhaps you would, too?

It's is 100000% not about sticking to the side of your own race. It's about every comment this poster makes on anything that has any sort of race connection, it's always white privilege. This last comment just put me over the edge. And when I say every comment, I mean it. I knew I shouldn't have even opened this thread seeing who has started it, but I needed to voice my feelings for these poor people and their families. Just as I felt the need to say that last comment. Knowing it wasn't a popular reply, but I had to because I felt so strongly about the constant finger pointing at every other person who doesn't believe they are horrible for being white. I just can't stand it

Hey, I can definitely appreciate the civil discussions we have had.

However, your comment kind of offended me. I feel 100% the same as she does. Just because I feel that way doesn't make me anti-white.

I'm sorry that you lost it, and I didn't mean for my comment to be snarky. It was simply a response to what you said. You did say something about flames, no?

I'd like to add that again, maybe it goes by the ay someone words things? Most of the time I don't feel like you are pointing at everyone from your side in Shame. You state facts, give your perspective and try to educate those who don't truly understand. You may have the same views in the end, but go about it so much better. Which is why you and I have been able to agree to disagree on things and move on.

Admitting the existence of white privilege has absolutely nothing to do with self hate based on race.

Nothing at all.

Admitting the existence of white privilege is a little like saying that the planets revolve around the sun or that red and yellow together make orange.

Any person who can sit and plan to calmly, walk up to another human being and kill them is not right in the head. I don't care what color you are, where you live, what your socioeconomic status is, if you have lived a life of privlidge or deprivation ..........NOONE in thier right mind just picks up a gun and walks into a school, or store, or church or into the street to kill another living, breathing human being.

I'm not in law enforcement, and I'm not a mental health professional ........but I'm sure there is a line, somewhere, where they determine the disgusting pieces of sh*t from those who are truly mentally ill and aren't held responsible for their behavoir. I'm so tired of hearing every poor, sad, white kid that had his feeling hurt and took his revenge out in the form of a bloodbath is 'mentally ill' ......the same way I'm tired of hearing that every black kid 'has a hard life'
Stop EXCUSING this behavior! When did it become acceptable to MURDER someone?
Who was bullied, who is poor, who had too much pressure at school. who came from a bad neighborhood - ALL terrible things to have to deal with as people, NONE of them excuses for MURDER.

Going to the South is like going to a different planet. People are so blatantly, PROUDLY racist it's disturbing.
This kid walked into a CHURCH and murdered 9 people.

ANYONE who can do that has a screw loose, but IMO, that's not what fueled him. He was fueled by racism and hatred. He wasn't provoked by these people, he didn't get into a confrontation and snap, he sauntered into a CHURCH and opend fire on random people he never met. Talk about a terrorist !!! He's an animal - and the Sandy Hook kid was an animal too.

Save the "Dead behind the eyes" garbage.
That is the mind of a deliberate, calculating disgusting sonofabitch.

And while I"m up here on my Chat Icon - They need to BAN that damned Confederate Flag !!!

Absolutely.

Phyllisnjoe, it makes me really disheartened to hear you say that to kitten1929 because it really shows just how many people are unwilling to learn about how white privilege works and affects us all. For years, I have been working on recognizing my privilege, and learning how being raised in a white supremacist society causes me to be racist. it's a constant work in progress, i will be doing it for the rest of my life, and i will remain open to others' critiques. it's uncomfortable, yet nothing compared to what people of color have to endure on a daily basis.

for those who would like to do the same, this is an awesome collection of articles on white privilege. It's a good jumping off point. Anyone who wants to chat about stuff, feel free to pm me.

Once again you put out what i try to say and I can never

Like I said earlier just bc I think he has mental issues does not mean I don't think he is a piece of crap animal disgusting human and doesn't mean I don't need think he needs to be held accountable

I just don't see who someone who can shoot 9 people in cold blood is sane

Also...I want to point out...claiming his "hate" is mental illness is just a way for white privilege to justify his actions, but also does a HUGE disservice to the mentally ill populations itself. We cannot allow the media to lump the mentally ill in with a hatemonger like Dylann Roof...he had the mental capacity to premeditate a hate crime of this nature.

I can't help myself.

You are the most self hating white person I have ever come into contact with.

Ever. Absolutely ever.

Admitting the existence of white privilege has absolutely nothing to do with self hate based on race.

Nothing at all.

Admitting the existence of white privilege is a little like saying that the planets revolve around the sun or that red and yellow together make orange.

It has nothing to do with me being unwilling to learn and a lot to do with the finger pointing in all posts pertaining to race especially. It bothers me tremendously.

Nobody was saying he's not racist. That wasn't the point at all on any of these posts. They were, mine included, stating he is indeed a racist pig. My point and point of some others was that he must have a mental illness. The OP said the media is making you feel bad for him and if it were a black man he'd be an animal or thug, if it were a Muslim, he'd be a terrorist, etc. I DO NOT feel bad for him and neither does anyone who has posted on this thread.

But to continually say the same thing, pointing fingers, gets me every time. If someone here was siding with him, go for it. But nobody has.

It was my bad for letting my raw emotion get the best of me and saying what this. But I couldn't resist the urge to get it out. Maybe it's just because the OP and I have have never agreed on pretty much anything and the way she words her replies rubs me the wrong way.

Raw emotion is raw emotion. Your comment about self hating white person speaks volumes about your position on racism and privilege, despite your personal feelings about the other poster.

eta what do you mean about finger pointing?
