Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

Hi, I'm newly pregnant and new to this forum. My current OB delivers out of Huntington Hospital - but I've heard mixed things about delivering there. Any thoughts either good or bad?

I live in Huntington - are there any other OBs to consider?

Thanks for the info.

Sorry for the multiple posts, I have no idea why that happened.

Re: Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

Quite a few of my friends have delivered there and they have all been very happy. I probably would have delivered there if we hadn't moved out of state. I loved my OB in Huntington - Dr. Lustberg. I was so bummed when we moved & he couldn't deliver my baby.

Re: Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

My whole family delivered at H.H. Nobody has ever had a problem there. The nurses are great. I've heard nothing but great things about the Labor/Delivery area there.

I'll be delivering there in October and I have no doubts about the place what so ever.

IMPO I think their ER stinks but I'm sure it's because they are understaffed.

Can you tell me which OB you use? I was with Suffolk OBgyn but Dr. Gronau left, so I switched to Kramer - and now he's gone too. And apparently, the others in the practice (van horn etc) are not doing deliveries? Also their northport office recently closed. Don't know what is going on.

Huntington Hospital is great..Ive had all my children there and have been happy with my care..

I am one of Dr Vanson's patients so I wasnt all that affected by the latest goings on at Suffolk OBGYN GROUP. But Dr Kramer has gone into practice with Dr Siegle at Huntington Medical Group....

Im fortunately a rare breed who really doesnt care who delivers my baby as long as I have an excellant doctor to see me through the pregnancy. My problem has always been keeping them in not getting them out!!!!!!!

Re: Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

I am actually switching dr's this month to deliver in Huntington. Right now I'm with St.Catherines but want to deliver in Huntington. I'm just more comfortable there.

I will be using WGM, they have offices in E.Northport & Huntington.

My sister & her SIL have delivered 5 of there kids w/ them.

I also was my BFF's coach 2 years ago. She was with Gronau & Greenstein.

The care we received at Huntington was GREAT! The nurses were amazing, sweet, accommodating etc. We were in & out of there so many times.

It's there ER that needs work!

Re: Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

My sister was born at Huntington Hospital 35 years ago and gave birth to her little girl there two years ago. I will be delievering there in December.

Like Heather I'm also Dr. Van Son's patient and wasn't affected by the happenings at Suffolk OB/GYN - but they do have a new female MD - Dr. Hearn. I thought she delivered.

I see Dr. Hearne. I haven't had a baby yet but I love her. She was so thorough.

Re: Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

I was born at Huntington Hospital, so was my brother...and that is where I delivered my baby in March.

I was extremely happy from the time I walked in the door for the induction until the time I walked out of 5 days later.

I was in a semi-private room but never had a roommate, the last day I was switched to a private room due to a problem with the room I was in.

Everyone I came into contact with was amazing!!

Re: Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

I just delivered there last Saturday. The experience in Labor and Delivery was great. I was induced and was there for both the night and day nursing staff. They were incredible. I can't tell you how wonderful everyone was, and how helpful, caring and experienced they were. The staff in the maternity ward was also excellent. They took great care of me, really focusing on my recovery, not completely focused on my new baby. Not that I didn't want the focus on my baby girl, but it felt good to also be cared for. As far as the Nursery, they were great. The nurses helped with breastfeeding tips and when I called them for the middle of the night feedings, they sent a nurse to come talk and help me. Overall it was a great experience.
One problem though. When I got my epidural, the needle was pushed too far and it caused a spinal leak. The effects caused an excrutiating headache and neckache that is just going away a week later. Be careful with the epidural, but in all honesty, I'm still glad I got it, it really helped during delivery.
Best of luck!

Dr. Kramer left too? I knew Dr. Greenstein left recently, but I didn't hear about Kramer too! What is going on there?? I'm at least glad to to hear Dr. Hearne is good.

Huntington Hosptial is a great Hospital especially L&D and maternity, their overall JCAHO scores are higher than most hospitals. You are in good hands, I loved it there.

My sister delivered two of her children at HH. She loves that hospital, and had no complaints.

Re: Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

Just a lurker with a different opinion. I wouldn't deliver at a hospital without a nicu, under any circumstance and for that reason wouldn't use a doctor who delivers there. I have many friends who are physicians and have been told this repeatedly (my pediatrician who is on staff there told me he would only let his wife deliver at LIJ or NorthSHore manhassett). Unfortunately, I know 3 people, who were not high risk, whose children needed specialized care that Huntington could not provide. I likewise wouldn't deliver at St. Catherine's, although its my neighborhood hospital.

Re: Should I deliver in Huntington Hospital?

I delivered at Huntington Hospital twice & highly recommend it.

I agree that the negative comments I heard were from a long time ago - before the renovation & before North Shore took it over.

My son was a preemie (born at 34 weeks). I was very happy with their special care unit & the treatment he (and we) received. I have nothing but the best things to say about the nurses in that unit, who walked me through every step & loaded us up with CASES of the special formula he was on.

At different points, I felt the nurses were trying to take care of me too. They insisted that I skip a feeding & sleep because I lost a lot of blood on delivery & started to look extremely run down going to the hospital every 3 hours to try to nurse him.

You can call the maternity ward after you leave with questions too.

Their courses they give are very good - infant care, breastfeeding, etc.

Also - not maternity related but when my daughter was hospitalized at 2 weeks old, they were also very good.
