Should I even bother fighting with DH over this?
We recently got a new computer and DH asked if we were able to copy DVDs. Of course we're able to, but I lied and said no. The background of this comes when DH and I met and he used to live with his dad. He and his dad had illegal cable and PPV and constantly spent all hours of the day recording movies just because "they could". Did they ever watch the movies again? NOOOO!!! But that didnt stop them from littering the house with VHS tapes. Now my cousin opened his big fat mouth and told DH that our computer was more than capable of copying DVD's. Now DH wants to go to start borrowing everyone's dvd's and using his blockbuster membership to start copying DVD's. This is now an ongoing (minor - no yelling) arguement between the both of us. I just cant justify spending money buying blank dvd's and possibly renting them, just to copy them. Second and most importantly, I am adamantly against stealing. All the songs I purchase are done through Imusic and I have yet to download anything illegally. DH thinks Im making a big deal out of this. What should I do? Should I just let this go?

well I see why you would be upset, but if he is not doing anything wrong or it's not going to be gaining any profit from it, it's still his computer too.
I don't see a big deal but I do download music without paying for it.

Re: Should I even bother fighting with DH over this?
I can see why your DH and mine got along! DH would love to do that but our computer doesn't copy DVDs. I don't know...Yes, it is stealing, but I grew up borrowing cassettes from my friends and copying them, was that illegal? If you feel really strongly, I would argue with him, but I pick and choose my battles and this probably wouldn't be something I'd fight. That's just me though...

It's a tough call. I guess for me it would be how important is it to you? Blank DVDs aren't very expensive, but that seems to be less of your concern. Rather than copy DVDs, will he compromise to borrowing them & watching them?
Also he's going to need the software to break the copyright on the DVDs to copy them. If he's not too technical, he's not going to be able to figure it out without help.

Re: Should I even bother fighting with DH over this?
I think I would sit down with him when I am not upset, and explain why it upsets me that he does this. If he kept doing anyway, even after that talk, I would probably let it go. I would still get annoyed by it, but I wouldn't want to keep re-hashing this issue over and over again.
I would definitely establish DVD-free zones in the house, though. I did this with DH's paperwork and bills, because they were constantly on the kitchen table and it made me crazy. He has a spot where he keeps everything, I never touch it, and he can keep it as messy as he wants.

Re: Should I even bother fighting with DH over this?
If he wants to spend his time running around town copying DVDs, let him do his thing. I wouldn't appreciate my DH telling me how to spend my time or what is an appropriate hobby or not. I'm guessing the novelty will wear off after a while anyway.

Re: Should I even bother fighting with DH over this?
Although it would bother me about the whole stealing thing, what bothers me the most is that the DVD's will be everywhere except the dvd player. He'll spend his time burning them and just to have them. And it wont be just a few, it will be alot. But again its not that we argue adamantly about it, but when he does bring it up I just keep saying, "Nope, not gonna happen". Im just not sure if this is one of those battles I should just let go.

I wouldn't help him copy the stuff, he'd have to do it all on his own. I'd also ask that he keep it to a certain area, or a specific box of dvd's so it doesn't take over your apt.

Actually, I don't see anything wrong with copying DVDs, if you do not sell the copies for profit. If you really feel strongly about this, you should definitely have a chat with your DH. Otherwise, I really don't think it's worth the aggravation.

techincally...you are allowed to copy dvd's/cd's you own...there is no ownership here since he borrowed it. selling copied software is a whole different street.....

this statement is not entirely true, ESPECIALLY if encryption is involved.

Re: Should I even bother fighting with DH over this?
looking for the right article....i found a couple but they are not good enough
but
you can make a backup of something you own. you may not distrubuite nor replace the orginal copy of the media. this is part of the debate as we want to use this media in different ways.... taking a cd and ripping it to mp3 and using it in a player.
there is more but i'm looking for a good article.

Maybe you could compromise. He has to keep the copied dvds in his closet or somewhere out of your sight. If they become too much and start to clutter your house then he has to stop. It's just a suggestion.

Re: Should I even bother fighting with DH over this?
I always found that odd, like u cant copy a dvd--but its ok to tape things off the vcr and watch it later or share it with someone else..
personally i think its more an issue "will u allow ur dh" i dont see how its really ur place to stop him, yes ur his wife but ur not his mother, id be really upset if my SO felt it was their right to tell me what to do or not do
