Should I get his hearing checked?

Cai doesn't always seem to hear us. It's not like he is ignoring us. He will ask "what?" 2-3 times when we tell him basic things. I'm not sure if it is that he has trouble comprehending and he needs processing time, or if he cannot hear us. sometimes he will complain the TV is too low, and if there are other noises he has trouble filtering them out to hear us.

When he talks on the phone with DH (who never talks that loud) he complains he can't hear him.

The weird thing is - this only started once he wore glasses!!! Are his senses "shifting" now that he doesn't have to rely on them as much - now that he can see? Does that make sense?

If you have had experience with this - please share. Also, if your DC has any hearing issues, please share as well. He passed his newborn screening, not sure if that counts for anything. He is 3 and a half. His language is great. He has a very advanced vocabulary, is very smart, and can have full conversations. It is just the complaints now and then that concern me....

Liza, did they test Cai's hearing at his 3 year well visit? They usually do, but if they didn't, I suggest seeing a pediatrician and have it tested and take it from there.

Re: Should I get his hearing checked?

I don't think there is any harm in getting a hearing test. There is a history of hearing loss in both DH and my families, so even though DS passed the newborn hearing test with flying colors (whew!) they will continue to test him every 6-9 months until about 4-5 years of age. He passed the 6 month test no problem.

Both my brother and sister were diagnosed with hearing losses around age 3.

ETA - the reason they are going to continue testing DS is because the audiologist told me hearing loss can develop at any time.

My DD gets it checked at her yearly. Her hearing has always been fine but she went through a phase of what, what, what at about 3.5 and it lasted a while.
We realized that background noise really affects her ability to concentrate on what we're saying. She also can't comprehend as well if she's not looking at you.
I will say it's much improved in the last 6 months.
I'll bet he's fine and it's just a part of the process.

Re: Should I get his hearing checked?

I would get it checked just to be safe. The Peds have the machinery for the basic hearing tests. If you don't need a refferal, I would go to an ENT that has an Audiologist in the office.

There is a great practice in Plainview on Old Country Rd.

Good Luck! I'm sure he is fine.

I notice he says it more when:

A. There is a lot going on
B. He is expecting a specific answer (so I think he gets distracted by that)
C. When he is lost in thought (hard to compete with light saber battles going on inside his head Chat Icon )

They did not do a screening at his 3 yr well visit. Guess they were too busy discovering he was blind as a bat Chat Icon

I would get his hearing tested just to be sure. It's a very simple test, most of the time anyway.

Another thing, does he have allergies? This is the season. He could have fluid in the inner ear. You never know. I lose my hearing all the time because of this, and so does my son I think.

This is going to sound completely bizarre but since you mentioned his "senses shifting" I figured it could be worth a mention Chat Icon

I have no vision (or hearing ) problems, however whenever I put on sunglasses I do not hear correctly ( it's an ongoing joke in my family and the reason why I only wear sunglasses when I absolutely have to) ...They also throw off my depth perception but that isnt too relevant to what you were asking...

So what I'm saying is that there could be some clout to what you are saying but I would definately mention it to the ped if it continues for peace of mind...
My DS has incredible hearing and went through a period of "whats" but it was short lived ( almost like it was a habit)
