I am going to the gyno next week. When I called they said they can start me on the prenantals. So I would assume go for it!

I started taking them... my doctor recommends being on them for 1-3 months prior to trying ttc

I dont use "prenatals" per se. I take my woman's mult-vitamin and take an extra folic acid pill. Dr. said that is fine (although he would have been more than willing to write me a prescription)

call your doctor and ask her / him to call in a perscription or there seems to be a lot of over the counter prenatals that seem great also!

My doctor told me that all prenatals are pretty much the same with regard to their content.
He also said that women who start their prenatals while TTC may not have MS as badly as others....

Pre TTC I used Target Prenatals because I didn't want to pay for a prescription. My dr said that was fine and when I got my BFP they gave me a prescription for prenatals but I still take the target ones because they are the only ones that don't completely upset my stomach.

No, you don't HAVE to but you can. Just make sur your daily vitamin has Folic acid in it.

I've been taking prenatals for about 8 months now... That is when we first wanted to officially start TTC.
I take Duet DHA, and have never had any side effects.

i take genovese brand (got them 75% off when they went out of business)
i'm almost 8 weeks now and my obgyn just gave me samples of prescription ones and i HATE them. so i'm just taking my genovese ones. he didn't want me on prenatals until i got pregnant. every doc is different--give yours a call
