This is the area I am thinking of decorating but maybe I should leave it plain? Pardon the open closet doors and the eyesore of a hallogen lamp. If I hang pictures, will people bump them as they walk up and down the stairs? I just don't know what to put up or how to arrange it. BTW, my DH built that banister himself (with advice from the place where we bought materials).

I love pictures! If it were MY wall I would have family photos on it!

I think I want that but I have no idea what shapes and sizes, whether to make collages, etc.

This is opposite my stairs but this is what I started out with.

They are all wooden frames, mostly black, one dark wood but what unifies them is that they are all B/W. I would suggest different shape frames but made from the same material/color and either all color or all b/w. All of the pictures were of our wedding and our parents' and grandparents' (those that we could find photos of) weddings.

I have more pics up there now but I don't have an updated picture of the wall.

This is the third wall I've done this way. I'd suggest buying a bunch of frames at Michael's or Kohl's when they are 40-50% off. Lay all of the frames out on the floor and play around with the layout until you like it. The more frames you have to start the easier it is to keep the wall unified.

I totally agree! Get a bunch of frames and lay them out.

I would do some nice matted photos. I wouldn't do collages...just my opinion

I would do matted pics too, not collages.

Pottery Barn has some layout ideas on their website.

We have family photos on our stair walls. FYI, make sure they are above shoulder-height. There will be occasions where you lean against the wall for one reason or another, and if they are too low, they fall of the wall and tumble down the stairs..... or so I've heard.... I would do 3 thin and long framed art pictures or do three long wall tapestries.

I'd buy a selection of frames and hang them in the center, and as the years go by, add a few frames with pictures to the wall. We did this in our kitchen.
