shrines on the side of the roads or highway's
Do you get distracted when you are driving by seeing a shrine dedicated to someone that passed on in that spot? I have to admit I do sometimes because they will have pictures of the person and I get all sad for that person who has passed on.

sometimes, it makes me think about how I am sure that person never expected this would happen to him/her and how vulnerable we all really are.

Yes, especially having been very close to a situation where there was one. It is very sad to see and makes me think back . . . .

It does make me sad. I always want to know more about the person who is being memorialized.

It's not a stupid question at all.
I find the memorials on the road distracting too. It's very sad to know someone died at that spot.

I always expect a post from you around the time you posted. It's a saying they use in horseracing.
And no, I do not look at shrines, and do not think they should be allowed. They cause traffic. That's what cemetaries are for.

we passed one a few weeks ago and DH commented that he's never seen that done anywhere else (meaning outside of NY). I thought that was interesting.

Re: shrines on the side of the roads or highway's
Good question Ro!
I was just having this conversation with a friend because there is yet another one a few blocks from my home. That makes exactly two on the very same corner (I can't imagine how the homeowners who live there feel when their lawn is covered in two separate shrines from two separate incidents). It seems like Woodside Avenue has turned into a virtual cemetary. While I feel horribly for those who have lost their lives, it's definitely a distraction for traffic. A young motorcyclist died (this was the 1st of two) off the main block where I live and every single holiday the corner is piled up with all sorts of stuff. Sometimes you can't navigate past it while walking because there's soo much stuff. No one cleans up after it either (after the flowers have died or the rain has melted/destroyed everything). I guess I would feel differently if it was someone I knew. I can see after the initial incident, but to have it as a permanent reminder seems sort of odd to me. That's what the cemetary is for.

Looks like we agree on one thing.
There is one on the Southern State that has printed out pictures that have been rained on, silk flowers that are just garbage now, and 9 times out of 10, I have to break about 100 yard from this spot, because someone feels the need to look at it.

Well, there's a 1st for everything
I guess I feel this way: I'm sure somewhere in history, someone died in the very spot I'm standing right now. Two feet from that spot, someone else died. If everyone who ever died was memorialized in more than one location (when we have designated cemetaries, etc.) than no one would be able to go anywhere. The sea is a virtual graveyard to hundreds of thousands of people. Can you imagine if there was a marker for every single person lost? Again, it's not about not feeling empathy but it gets a little much sometimes.

Re: shrines on the side of the roads or highway's
Yes, it can be a distraction, and it does make me sad. JMO, I do not think they should be allowed because they eventually just become a mess from the weather, time, etc. and that doesn't really seem respectful. I completely understand how people feel they need to remember their loved ones, but like some have already mentioned, that is what cemeteries are for and I don't really think we need a shrine to remember people we loved.

They are very sad. I think about the families who placed them there... that must be very difficult.

Re: shrines on the side of the roads or highway's
I thinks its distracting as well but it's not bothersome for me.
There is this one spot in Greenlawn where 2 kids in H.S were killed in separate incidents. Someone wrapped the shirt one kid was wearing around the tree he hit and it's still there! It's all ripped and faded, hanging on by a thread. This happened over 10 years ago. I think about him every time I see it.

Re: shrines on the side of the roads or highway's
They do distract me, I will slow down, look, and get sad thinking about what happend and who it was, etc.
There are a few in my area and I know the kids it involved, so I always slow down and look.
Do I think it shouldn't be allowed - no, if that's the family/friends' way of doing something nice for the person that passed, I wouldnt want to stop it.
There are alot of other worse distractions on the road, IMO.

Re: shrines on the side of the roads or highway's
I think its sad and somewhat distracting but like someone else said, there are WAY more other thing that are WAY more distracting.
Also, whenever I see that, it tends to make me be more careful..maybe it was a windy road or something, sometimes it makes you more cautious too which can be a good thing in the long run.
