Sick or dying - UPDATE
We have a 10 year old sheppard/rotty mix. He has been getting slower over the past year. Today DH comes in the house and tells me that he is breathing heavy and is wheezing and lazy. I go out to see him and his nose is all stuffy and hes being lazy. DH wipes his nose and his breathing regulates. Ive never had an old dog before... is this how they act before "the end"?
UPDATE: Carl passed away after 10 long years. I don't want anyone to think I am cold and heartless for not rushing to the vet. I have one in the family and we had a long discussion with him about options. He must have had some serious internal problems that never presented itself until today when DH went to move him and put him in the truck. The black fluid was pooled old blood. He wasn't in pain till DH moved him. We will never know exactly what happened to him. We do know that he is at peace and up playing in doggie heaven chewing on bones and playing with balls to his hearts content. He was a great dog, a great protector and will be greatly missed

10 is old for a Rottie. My IL's put their Shepard to sleep on Monday - she was 13. I would take your pup to the vet - it could be something like a cold.  for the pooch!

Definitely take him to a vet, he is old but my friends Rottie lived to 14 so it may be something fixable.

Looks like my DH is giving up. I went to check on him this AM and he barely lifted hs head to look at me

He could have allergies. Is he eating? If he's not, that's a definitely sign that something is wrong... tempt him with some food and see what happens, but either way, I'd bring him in just to get some confirmation on what's wrong.

I would take him to the vet... its good that he's eating, but the fact that he threw up... better to be safe, ya know.

 Don't give up... take him to the vet! He could just be sick and get better with some meds... you'll never know unless you take him... tell DH to fill that hole in!

Please take him to the vet. If he is dying, the vet can put him to sleep and he won't be in pain.
He must be in so much pain. Please take him.

Please, please take him to the vet. He may not be at his end. He may just be sick. If there is nothing they can do, they can help him leave this world in as little pain as possible. I've had to do this 4 times. I knew each time by the look in their eyes that their time was at hand. The vet would not be a waste of time.

aww, take the poor guy to the Vet. It's NEVER a waste of money. It could very well be something fixable. My dog DEF. had days of not getting up at all in the end, but there was usually a cause, I would take him to the Vet, and he would rally. If I gave up on him he would have died a full 2 years before he needed too.
If nothing else, he can pass on with the vets help, and stop being in pain. to your Rottie.

I'm the last person to get preachy, but I cannot believe you are just going to dig a hole and bury this dog who has been your companion for ten years.
Why wouldn't you just up and take him to the vet right way? Why wait?
I'm sorry, I know this may be a difficult time for you, but this was totally the wrong way to handle it.

You MUST take this dog to the vets, not taking him is cruel, I am sorry if you are upset, but how can you just stand there and do nothing? If he is dying, then let the vet make that determination and put this poor animal out of his misery

Please take him to the vet.. He may have something that is easily treated. How can you just assume he is dying and let him suffer?
If it is something that can't be treated they will put him to sleep so he is out of his misery.. I don't know how you can stand and watch him like this..
