Side effects to antibiotic (long and tmi)

DD is having a rough couple of weeks....

First she had diarrhea for 4+ days, then she got a fever, tooth and cold. Finally on wednesday she was diagnosed with an ear infection. Dr. Prescribed antibiotic, and now she's been having side effects - she hasn't been finishing her bottles or her solids, and she threw up 2x (1st time b/c mean mommy was forcing her to eatChat Icon) After the first time, we didn't force her. but she threw up again this morning and now has had diarrhea (TMI it was basically the solids dinner we gave her last night)

Dr. to give her florostor 2x a day (we'd already been giving it to her 1x) But now she won't eat at all - I told the nurse who called us back this, so I"m waiting for Dr. to call us again.

I really think this is b/c of the antibiotic b/c yesterday she was fine at daycare, ate all her food and not bad tummy symptoms. I think it was b/c she threw up the Thursday night dose of the antibiotic when I forced her to eat.

Last night she finished the antibiotic, but didn't eat much afterward. Then this morning she threw up after she ate 1/2 her bottle and then the other end happend this morning.

I want to discontinue the antibiotic. What do you moms think?

This also means that we won't be going to the GTG todayChat Icon I was really looking forward to it.

Aw I am sorry that you are having a rough time.

It absolutely can be the antibiotics, but I would not stop them. If there is an infection in her body, it needs to go. Rather I would get some baby probiotics. They have it in most refrigerated sections of the Health Food store, and even at some drug stores. Especially if you had a c-section (not sure if you did or not, just giving some extra info) the baby does not get the necessary candida that it would passing through the birth canal. It makes for a tough time when giving any med that is intended to kill bacteria/flora, which an antibiotic essentially does. The antibiotic cannot tell the difference if a bacteria is good or bad, so all are affected, hence the stomach and digestive issues that come with antibiotics.

Thanks for responding - Florostor is a probiotic - so I've been giving them to her, but its not helping. The Dr just called in a different antibiotic, so hopefully that will help.

Sorry Chat Icon
I agree with the pp, I would not stop the antibiotics. Untreated ear infections can lead to very bad problems. I would continue with the meds. until MOnday, and call the ped. to see if they could lower the dose or have any other suggestions.
Hang in there!

Re: Side effects to antibiotic (long and tmi)

it was Cefdinir, but now the Dr. put her on Amoxacillon.

The thing is that DD is VERY small for her age. She is in 10th percentile for weight and she's been sick for 2 weeks - not finishing her bottles and on pedialite for 4 days - When she's healthy she eats fine, but mostly b/c I am emphatic that she finishes things b/c she is so small. Now its been 2 weeks of not eating well and I don't want her to fall to less than 10th percentile! Chat Icon

She's got her daddy's metabolism - if she had mine, she'd put weight on just looking at food!Chat Icon
