Sight words/phonics..
Is there any videos/systems/books/computer programs etc that you have found helpful when working with your child? I am looking for something that will enhance more of dd's learning skills. Not sure where to begin. TIA

Re: Sight words/phonics..
I love the starfall.com website as far as computer games. It starts out with basic letter and sound recognition and goes up into reading texts.
Also if you visit a teacher store or look on scholastic online, you can find teaching handbooks for sight words. We have one that gives you cards that you can cut out (glue to index cards) and a ton of game suggestions.
Everything from blank word search grids to fill out, to games that you can play around the house...
We have had a lot of fun with them.
Also make up an index file box with your child's sight word flash cards. Keep it in ABC order. When she needs to spell a word in her writing she can look them up. You can also test her on them and make piles of what she knows and what she doesn't know.

Re: Sight words/phonics..
we have a "magic reading box" which is filled with letter sounds, decodable words (pan, can, cap, cat, etc) high frequency words (my, the, a, go) and word families (basically the end of words like just ad ap and an- so she can take the letters and pair them to make her own words).
This seems to be working a lot.
Her Kindergarten teacher makes them for each kid in the class. They're amazing and she's make a lot of strides.

Re: Sight words/phonics..
My son's Kindergarten teacher calls sight words "popcorn words" because they "pop" out of your mouth. She had them make these really cute popcorn containers out of chinese food cartons. Then weekly she sends home a ditto with words written inside a circle that looks like popcorn and he cuts them out and puts them inside. I personally think this is brilliant, as it also helps with his fine motor skills by cutting.
