Since going back to ballet...

I find myself being tougher on myself about my body....not like how I used to, but I was hoping I would just enjoy it--minus the harsh criticism on myself. I'm not sure how to get over this....I mean, I'm 28, not 16. I'm not going to look the same......

Re: Since going back to ballet...

Unfortunately, I think that's all part of standing in a room of mirrors with 20 other women for prolonged periods of time Chat Icon I just took class for the first time in ages and felt awful about myself...

I find it a little helpful at least to try to find myself a spot with as little view of myself as possible. It's hard to avoid during centre work, but I just try to concentrate on how it feels, and not pay attention to how it looks - does taht make sense?

Baggy clothes help too! Chat Icon But I'm sure you look great!

Lana, ballet skirts were my friend (so was wearing all black) when I took ballet.

I'm sure you look great but I totally agree with what Farah said, too. Chat Icon

Easier said than done, but keep telling yourself that it's not a competition.
You're there to have fun!

Re: Since going back to ballet...

i know exactly how you feel- same happens to me when i am put in certain situations.

my advice is to keep reminding yourself that you have different priorities now. i wasted so much of my teens and college worrying about my body that took away from just enjoying life the way a college student would. things that mattered then (such as who is the thinnest in your class) don't matter now. i just try to remember that there are more important things in life to focus that energy on and enjoy it

Also, Lana, if there are professional dancers in your class, you can always try telling yourself what I used to when I was working at the ballet and compared myself to ballerinas that were my age, but definitely not my body type - it's their JOB to WORKOUT!!! Chat Icon
