This site has pretty good information.
The problem I find with composting is that it takes a while to get a good batch of results. It's definitely not an instant gratification thing. But if you're a gardener, it can be pretty great.
I'm pretty patient when it comes to that stuff, so I'm not worried. I'm going to start my own compost pile or container in spring. I haven't done it yet though.

We keep a covered bin in a corner of our backyard for composting. We put leaves and kitchen scraps in there, mix it up periodically, and voila -- excellent soil for our garden about 9 or 10 months later.
Composting has dramatically reduced the amount of trash we make. SO much of what we used to throw away now goes into the compost pile.

That's not necessarily true. You need to constantly work the pile. we have a 3-tier bin from Smith & Hawken and yielded workable compost a few times during the short summer season. The amount of worms that found our bin was incredible.
The formula is equal parts brown & green. Brown being dried leaves and dirt...and green being fruit, veggies, coffee grinds, eggshells, etc.
ETA - you can also add paper towels & places - without ink - into the pile. Preferably unbleached...

We have a green garbage bin that the council gives us, we can put garden and kitchen waste into it. The town then takes it away and its mulched and composted.
