Re: skiing in upstate
I always loved Belleayre Mountain. Its not as big as Hunter or Windham or as crowded. The mountains in NY are probably not great now thou because of the weather. IF you're actually looking to ski/board I'd go further North.
We have a house on Mt.Snow in VT. It's about 4 hrs away and the skiing is always good.
Jiminy Peak is a good family mountain too.

My family and I have always loved and skiied at Windham Mountain. It is less than 3 hours away and people are usually very friendly..HOWEVER the snow is pathetic there right now. you can go to the website at www.windhammountain.com I would go to Vermont now or Lake Placid area for the snow

I know this isn't very helpful because I've never been skiing, but our friends go skiing at Mt. Peter in I believe Warwick, NY. It's in Orange County - so about 1 1/2 - 2 hours from Long Island.

Yup its in Warwick, but its been closed due to the unseasonably warm winter Its a great local place, its small with no hotel accomaodations nearby. If you are looking to stay over you can try Mountain Creek in Vernon, NJ which borders Warwick, but again they have no snow either.
I would defintely look into Vermont

Mt. Peter is not making snow. Mountain Creek is making snow, from what I have heard.

Nope no snow making at Mountain Creek either. They are even sending their season pass ticket holder to their sister mtn. in Stratton Mtn, VT for free and up to Hunter Mtn at a discount.
Hope the cold weather will come soon, this must be killing them!
