Skin/Pimple Spin Off
Does anyone get like large cystic pimples??
I started to get really bad pimples actually leading up to the wedding- I am sure totally stress related. Since then, I have had the more stressful jobs of my career, and have had life stuff which has just caused more stress-- buying a home, etc.
I get regular facials and take care of my skin-- and I have no idea what to do to stop them! I feel like I am 31 and my skin is worse now than when I was a teenager. They come and go-- but when I have a few at once I just feel so ugly.
I am interested in trying proactiv, but I think that since my zits are stress related and hormonal, I am not sure it would help.
Anyone have experience?

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
My skin isn't that bad, but it was best when on dermatologist-prescribed antibiotics. Have you seen a doctor? Since going off the antibiotics I am on prescribed topicals that also really help. I am on Klaron and Duac. Who knows, maybe my skin would be fine not using anything now, but I stick with it.
I tried Proactiv. It is OK, but I think what you are describing needs a prescription-strength.

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
when I got those huge ones my doc injected them w/ something directly. it actually didn't hurt that bad and they went down right away. salt compresses (salt diluted in hot water) also worked wonders. I took accutane and no longer get those.. thankfully.

I think you're talking about cortizone. I would try Pro active before I tried prescriptions. I do not believe in being on antibiotics inless absolutely medically necessary. Topical products are absorbed through yoru skin and processed by your liver. Pro active DOES work if you use it religiously

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
I had the same thing in college - i was a bank teller so I handled money all day and even when i washed my hands a million times, i would break out on my chin and jawline from touching my face.
Proactiv did NOT work for me- made it worse actually.
if you go to a derm., they will give you antibiotics.

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
thanks guys-- I have not had topical prescriptions since puberty! I have not really had a skin problem since then-- just some period zits every now and then. But sometimes it gets so bad-- it's totally embarassing. Makes me feel unhealthy.

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
I have cystic acne most of my life - since puberty - except for about 5 years after taking acutane -
the only thing that works for me is acutane but i don't want to use it again
actually steroids work to get rid of them i noticed when i had a sinus infection - pretezone worked for me
none of the antibiotics work for me
i have them on my jaw line and chin mostly - which is a sign they are hormonal stress related
oh practive does nothing for my cystic acne

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
I was diagnosed with cystic acne when I was in high school. I tried various gels, ointments, and antibiotics - all prescribed by my dermotologist.
Finally he recommended we try Accutane. I was on it for about six months and then he took me off of it. Since then I have had maybe six minor blackheads over the course of 7 years.
My stress comes out in the form of cancer sores/ulcers.

that is where I get them-- and I knew that because my facialist told me that-- I mean, wonder if I should try yoga vs. a prescription.

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
Yes and mine are hormonal and bacterial...so the Dr prescribed antibiotics which I used for a month but then stopped. I wasn't comfortable with taking antibiotics indefinitely - regardless of how low-dose they are. My other concern was starting smething that I loved only to have to stop it if I got pregnant.
When I feel a really painful one coming I go to the Dr for a shot of cortizone. The zit goes down within 2 days.
I've resorted to Bare Minerals (even though I hate wearing makeup) and I love it. It's light and covers the redness - evens out my skin.
I have an appointment sometime next month with a new pimple popper - it's my last resort at trying something new.

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
I get terrible cysts too, NOTHING helps topically. You would need to go to your derm and have it injected. It goes away rather quickly after, otherwise you could have it for a few weeks!!!

I also drink a TON of water which I have found helps.

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
I used to and nothing could get rid of them - I took antibiotics, used topical creams, special soap - for years until finally before my wedding after crying my eyes out to my dermatologist that I couldn't get married with a face like that, she prescribed accutane. That stuff is poison but it works.

Perfect description!
I took it till I could not tolerate it any longer. My bloodwork was revealing my triglycerides were out of control. The dryness was killing my lips as well - but in the end it was so worth it.

How does accutane work?
You take it for a period of time and then stop or are you on it indefinitely as a cure AND maintenance?

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
I have the same problem. And the worst thing about cystic pimples is even when they are gone, they leave a red mark on my face for months.
I used Proactiv and it worked for a while but stopped working. I tried a bunch of stuff.
Right now I am in the process of getting the blue light laser. I have had 2 treatments so far and have seen a big difference in my skin. I should have 3-4 treatments. I will see how I do after the 3rd. Costs $$$$$ though. But I can't be 29 with acne anymore, it's just ridiculous.

I was on it for 7 months and had just about every side effect you could have - excema (sp?), blurry vision, dry lips. I even had a cyst come out when I was at the highest dosage because of all the wedding planning and other stress I was under at the time. But that was also my last cyst ever!

Re: Skin/Pimple Spin Off
Used to get cyst type ones on my jawline....for me? Dairy was the culprit. Whenever I binge on cheese---BOOM! Breakouts. Also, lay off the makeup. My skin is now so nice and I only wear powder.
OH! GNC Hair, Skin, Nail pills are great. Tons of biotin in them--great for skin. Esp. hormonal issues.

It's generally about a 4-6 month cycle and then you're never on it again. Like I said, it's poison - you have to take a monthly blood test and urine test to prove you're not pregnant before they prescribe a refill. I started at about 20mg a day and increased each month until I was at 100mg (thought I was going blind that month) and then they gradually bring you down again.
There's a whole bunch of reading material they gave me at the beginning, because this stuff is so toxic it has to be strictly regulated.
ETA: You can't drink alcohol because it can destroy your liver and you should not get preggo while on it because it will cause birth defects.

i was on it for 6 months when i was 18 - and i had very god skin for about 7 years - no cystic acne - but now itis coming back and i am debating about going back on it - had a friend go on for a second time bfore her wedding
need to take pregnancy test and use two kinds of birth control if you re sexually active
my skin was so dry and i had bloody noses a lot i had to have blood tests once a month to test liver function and tricliceroids - my tricgliroids were high at the end
i drank when i was on it- back then they did not say not to - and i was a college freshmen

It's as though I wrote this. I tried EVERYTHING under the sun...the ONLY thing that worked for me was Accutane. I've been acne free - all forms since 2002.

Egad, it sounds toxic indeed. Not sure if I'm ready for something that invasive.
