Sleep Study Testing
Has anyone had or know anyone who has had a sleep study test done. If so, what does it entail? TIA!

Re: Sleep Study Testing
DH had one done at Winthrop. He went to the hospital about 6-7 PM, they taped wires and probes to different areas of his head and he went to sleep. they monitored him thru the night and found that he woke up 60 times in 1 hour!!! He was home by 7am the next day. He definitely has sleep apnea and was fitted for a CPAP machine a few days later.
This is a very serious condition and should be looked into ASAP.
It definitely saved our marriage!! I was tired of sleeping on the couch!!
good luck!!

Re: Sleep Study Testing
My DH had it done.
He spent two different nights hooked up to monitors. Hehad to do this in the hospital because of our insurance but it may not have to be there. He now has a CPAP machine that he sleeps with every night because they found he has severe sleep apnea. He had 70 episodes an hour as they put it.

Re: Sleep Study Testing
I work at a sleep lab, and I run the sleep studies.
Well, all sleep labs are different with their procedures, so I will explain ours.
You would come for a consultation with one of the doctors, this is when you would set up an appointment, and speak to the doctor about your sleep problems.
The night of your sleep study, you would come into the lab and be shown to one of the rooms, and you would be given paperwork to fill out. A tech would then come into your room and begin your set up. The pt gets about 21 electrodes placed on the body. 5 on the head, 8 on the face, 2 on each sholder(4 total), 2 on each leg (4 total).
After that, the tech would put you into bed, usually between the hours of 10-1130pm. You would get additional equipment put on, before going to bed. All your electrode wires are pluged into something call a head box. It is small and hangs around your neck. This is where we have a connection to plug it in to our computer system.
After lights out, we just want the pt to sleep, we do have cameras in the room, but they are really just for us to see the body postion of the pt. . You can get up anytime during the night to use the Bathroom, just by calling one of us with the intercom system.
After your first night, you may have to stay for a sleep study during the day. This is determined by the doctor. These are called Nap studies,or MSLT.
On your second visit, you may either come back for a second night study, which is basically the same as the first night. This is usually because not enough apnea events where seen. Sometimes pts sleep better on the second night.
Or your second night, might mean you will be trying the sleep mask (CPAP/BIPAP). You would not go home with a machine that night. The doctor would need to go over your record, and prescribe you a pressure, to use in your own home.
Ok, this is really long!! Just thought I could help.

Re: Sleep Study Testing
I can't comment more than Alli did on the procedure, but FH has had it twice..the first time he was so uncomfortable he couldn't sleep for long enough to get an accurate read. the second time showed apena when he lays on his back, but at home he doesn't ever lay on his back, but he did get the CPAP machine and is just starting to try it out.
If youy're worried about being able to sleep, I know the place Fh went to allowed him to bring his own pillow and blanket and DVDs

Re: Sleep Study Testing
I keep begging Dh to go get a sleep study. My father has sleep apnea and I know DH does. I can hear him not breathing and kick him and he starts again.
He just won't go though, he claims he could never fall asleep there so whats the point
Good luck!

I think we live parallel lives! My DH had a very similar experience. He did his at Stony Brook. But thank god he got his CPAP machine! Now I can sleep!
