Small dogs & cars
we are going on a road trip. (6 hr drive( Scurffy will normally sit in front passenger seat or sit on whom ever is the passenger. I doubt he would be excited for the whole 6 hours. Are there any devices or anything used to keep dogs buckled in, say in the back seat? I'm bring his bed but he enjoys being in the front with us, looking out the window... We don't crate him and he would hate it as we try not to restrict him.
Any suggestions?

Re: Small dogs & cars
My MIL bought a seat belt for her yorkies for when they do road trips. You might look into purchasing one of those.
Fosters and Smith has them in their catalog.

Re: Small dogs & cars
What works best for us is very simple: a harness and a very short strap. The strap is really nothing but a short leash (about 12 inches long). The strap is meant for this purpose. We hook him to the seat belt.
If you do this: Use a harness and not a collar that could choke your dog or have the effect of hanging him in an accident.
When you strap him in, make sure that there is not enough rope/strap to allow him to fall over the edge of the seat. Even with a harness, you do not want to risk hanging your dog and you do not want to have to get into the back seat to help him back up again.
I wish I had a better or even safer solution but my dog has chewed his way out of other arrangements. He is at least okay with this.
Dogs are injured in car accidents every day. My dog loves to be in my lap in the passenger seat but it is really not all that safe.
