small dogs and food?
Milo is a long hair chihuahua and I am wondering if I am over feeding him because he looks like he is getting a little chunky!
How many times a day and how much of it do you give your small dogs?

I have a long hair chihuhua puppy too. I would go by what it says on the back of the bag of food based on the pounds and age of the dog..
Its says 1/2 cup 2X a day.
My little one is only 3 lbs so I fill the small bowl and she grazes all day long. She hardly ever finishes it.
I know small dogs can get overwight quickly.

It depends on the dog.
Sometimes the recommendation on the bag might not be what your dog needs. Every dog is different (metabolism, activity etc.)
You should go to your vet to see what he/she thinks of your dog's weight.
I feed our dogs 1/2 cup once a day.
When I fed them 2x a day, they wouldn't eat one of the meals, so the vet recommended I go to once a day.
both our dogs are 10 lbs

We free feed (keep the bowl out all day for them to graze when they get hungry), and that's worked for us. Both dogs are within normal weight limits.

That's what I am doing. I fill the bowl up in the morning and let him graze all day. I don't think he is overweight at all but maybe since the weather hasn't been that great he hasn't really been going for too many walks. It is also hard because he only eats "part" of the food we give him and leaves a lot of it behind so I tend to put in more since I know he only eats certain pieces.
does anyone elses dog only eat "part" of the food given?

2X a day 1/2 cup each, but she usually never finishes it all and we just leave it out for her to nibble on if she is hungry. If in the AM, it's still there we toss it and start over again.

I have an overweight Chihuahua (hes about 9lbs and should be closer to 6  )
I give him only 1/2 a cup twice daily.

Katie is 16.5 lbs and gets 3/4 cup of kibble 2x a day. She also gets 2-3 treats. She eats her food same time everyday.

i also free feed my lil guy. He grazes sporadically and by the end of the day there is still kibble in his bowl. Hes a little overweight by a couple of pounds because of the weather. Once it gets warm outside he runs around the yard and looses a couple of pounds.

I let my yorkie graze all day because he eats such tiny amounts at a time. He is only 3.5lbs so I just let him have access all day. My larger dog i feed twice a day because she packs it on very easily.

Lola is a grazer - her food is in her crate (she only gets dry food)
She eats when she's hungry and that's really it ........
of course, if she sees cheese or Italian bread, all bets are off and she MUST be included for a snack

I do this method also. My dog is 4 lbs and never eats more than a little at a time so if i picked up her food she'd never eat! So so far it's been working that I let her eat when she's hungry! How much exercise does your little dog get? I know since mine goes on wee wee pads she doesn't get out much during the winter...so I try to make sure to play with her inside...

I am sure it is because it is winter and his walks are much quicker and fewer and he does not run around really at all in the backyard during the winter---he just goes out, does his business and then comes right back in. During the nicer weather we take multiple walks for much longer periods of time and he runs around and plays in the yard.
Thank you to everyone for all the information! I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing.

I was feeding the amt listed on the bag and my vet told me i was over feeding... My dog is 30 lbs but should be 25.. bag says 2 cups a day and vet said 1 cup a day, which i split between morning and night. The high amts of food listed helps them sell more dog food
I'd say check with your vet for their opinion

I have 2 chihuahuas and I feed both of them a decent sized bowl in the morning before work. Sometimes its all gone and I will give them a little at night which they don't finish, but as long as Chico isn't banging on the bowl with his collar, usually once a day.

I have a long haired chi also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is 6 lbs. The vet told us to feed her about a 1/2 cup 3 times a day
