Small dormer on cape house...anyone have this done?
We have been living in our house for 3 years (medium sized cape). We're considering putting a small dormer on the top floor to add another bathroom (we currently have one downstairs) and to expand the 2 bedrooms upstairs a bit.
I just wanted to see what we were getting into. Here are my questions: -Is it possible to still live in the house while the work is being done? -Approximate time frame for building dormer? -Approximate cost (for example, 20-30K, 70-80 K, etc.)? -Any other information that you can offer.

Re: Small dormer on cape house...anyone have this done?
We did a full dormer on our cape, so I can somewhat answer your questions:
-Is it possible to still live in the house while the work is being done?
Absolutely...we lived there with a 1 year old, even during the demo of the entire second floor. It wasn't fun, but it was possible...I even lived to tell about it!
-Approximate time frame for building dormer?
Ours took FOREVER, but that's because it was family...Weather permitting, the shell itself should be done in a couple of weeks, max. If you're talking soup to nuts, down to the paintbrush, it really depends on your permits and the contractors you hire...do they show up when they're supposed to?
-Approximate cost (for example, 20-30K, 70-80 K, etc.)?
Our full dormer cost approx 80K for everything
-Any other information that you can offer. Um...try to go with a GC if possible so you don't have to do all the running around subcontracting for yourself. That was really hard for us...and it's a lot of unnecessary running around...you'll have enough on your plate.
