Smelly dog

I have a beautiful, 16 month old Goldendoodle. He is the sweetest boy BUT he smells. He has terrible allergies and we have been unable to find the right meds to help him. He bites at himself all day and because of that he just smells. We bathe him every week and nothing helps. My house is starting to smell like dog and it is so embarrassing. Has anyone had this issue? What have you done? I febreeze the house... carpets, furniture, etc. Nothing helps. We are still desperately trying to find the right meds, cream, etc for him but until we do (we have been working on this for almost a year now), I do not want to be embarrassed to have people in my home.

Any tips for my home or my sweet itchy puppy would be appreciated.

Have you tried a shampoo with oatmeal and tea tree oil? I use pet head Life's an itch and it stops my dog from scratching from allergies.

What about allergy shots ? every few months ? I give them to my dog when it get really bad certain times of the year.. Also is bathing him so often ok? Can you be actually making the smell worse? not sure

The doctor said it was okay to bathe him that often and we have special medicated shampoo from the vet. I have actually held off for a while thinking maybe the constant bathes were making his skin dry and itchy. Same old, same old. He only scratches/bites at his feet, the back of his legs and his stomach. He is on meds but shots might be the next step. The vet "has a plan".

The smell is terrible though and you smell it when you walk in my house. He is 62 pounds of stinky and as much as I love him, the thought of a smelly house for the next 15 years makes me freak.

Do you allow him on the furniture?
Will you get rid of the carpets?
If he's on furniture, maybe put covers on them so they can be washed weekly when he is as to not let the smell get back on him so quickly.
Steam clean carpet/furniture?
Sorry, that's all I can really think of for the smell.
Can you put out turf instead of walking him on grass or just walk him on concrete/blacktop?
My friend's rottie ended up going on Benadryl and that helped a little with his allergies and the inflammation.
Maybe only allow him in certain rooms until you get an answer... I know, easier said than done.
Tough situation, I hope he feels better soon and stops stinking up the place.

What helped decrease my dog's licking, biting himself and leaving dry skin flakes everywhere was putting omega oils in his food (Wellactin).

I have a goldendoodle and she has some allergy issues but definitely not as bad as yours. She's on a chicken and grain free food (nutri max). I hate dog smell in general which is why I only have leather couches and limited area rugs. I also don't allow her upstairs in the bedrooms. I only bathe her once every few months since it seemed it irritate her skin more. How about a short haircut?

I have an itchy lab with possible allergies (we never went for the official allergy test) but our vet recommended a few things:
-Fish oil pills w/food
-A few benadryl with food (we were giving her 4-5 per day during the colder dry days)
-Adding a humidifier
-Oatmeal bath

I think all of those things helped except the humidifer - not sure that made a difference, but her coat got soft & shiny ad she itches sooo much less. Now that it is getting warmer we are weaning the benadryl and keeping the fish oil up.

Thanks everyone. I will try a bunch of these things. Some we are already doing. He is getting his haircut short in two weeks. I started adding the oils again to his food. I did not notice a big difference the first time I used it but it can not hurt to try again.

Absolutely look into the food....most people tend to treat the problem from the outside (ie. environment, shampoo, external allergens, etc.) however, good results usually come from treating this inside-out through the food. If the vet has not discussed the food issue with you, I'd be surprised.
