Smoking?

I know this is a tough topic when it comes to pregnacy but I was curious if anyone smoked up until they found out they were pg.

I am not planning to get preg. now - but if it happened and you didn't know until you were 4 weeks or so.

Anyone quit the day they found out they were preg. and if so - could it do any damage to the baby?

Thanks all !

Re: Smoking?

I cut down tremendously, However I did smoke( 1 -3 a day) until I found out. I also drank until the day I found out. As long as you quit, the baby will be fine.

Re: Smoking?

I had quit for MONTHS before I got pg then right before the wedding a started smoking again (very little) from the stress. It was a stupid relapse. But I did quit after finding out I was PG... not even immediately. My baby was born perfectly healthy. It's much better if you can quit before hand though because at least you can use medication or NRT, once you are pg you have to quit cold turkey.

Alot of people smoke and drink before knowing they are pg. Think of all the surprise pgs (like mine) and they give birth to healthy babies. I've even read that as long as you quit before 16 weeks pg you have an equal chance of giving birth to a healthy baby as a woman who didn't smoke. I doubt anyone would actually recommend doing that though.

Re: Smoking?

my cousin smoked throughout her 2nd PG ( I don't know about the 1st) and that baby ended up weighing more than the 1st.

I've never smoked.

Re: Smoking?

For my first, I quit right when I found out - and stupidly went back to it a year later.
For this pregnancy I quit 3 months prior to getting PG.

Re: Smoking?

I was not trying to conceive at all when I found out we were pregnant with my son-- I was 11 1/2 weeks, and worried, because the week prior was the 4th of July, I had drank- a lot- and I was a steady smoker..

I fessed up and told my dr. everything, and he told me to stop from then on.. as soon as I took a pee test, on the 5th of July I stopped smoking.. cold turkey...
My dr. pretty much said that there are many cases like mine, and that 99.9% of the babies turned out just fine..

ETA: My son is super smart, and came out perfect... 10 lbs 5oz, 22.5inches long!!
