Smoking while pregnant-what I saw made me angry

When I was in the hospital I had an interesting roommate

One was a smoker. She had high BP (200/110) and had to come in for a 24hr urine collection at 26 weeks. The first morning the docs came in and chastized her-they either found marijuanna in the urine or bloodwork. When they suggested a social worker she said she had enough people to talk to and refused ( I suspect when she delivers something will be done). This same woman would put on her clothes and walk downstairs to smoke twice a day and the nurses unfortunately could only suggest she not do it as they physically are not allowed to stop her.
i watched this woman down sallty food her friends would bring her. I listened to this woman tell the doctors that she drank socially with her friends during pregnancy and she did it with her first and he was fine.

I was relieved when she left the 4th day cause I literally was nauseated by her.

the hospital allowed her to eat her own food?? Thats severe pre exclampsia B/p.....

No-the hospital had her on a bland low salt diet which she complained had no taste. So when she had visitors they would bring her food.

I did not know this but nurses really cant stop you from doing anything just advise. The most they can do is report it to the doctor who can then take it up with a social worker I guess. I wonder what will happen to her.

I think it's so sad that people like that can get pregnant and so many ladies who would be awesome mothers have trouble getting pregnant.

That's weird about her testing positive for marijuana...they would have had to have specifically tested her for this....I wonder what would have made them test for that? Maybe she is a drug offender and that would have been a violation of her parole or something...hmmm

I so wish I hadn't opened this thread! I'm one of those women that has been having a difficult time trying to get pregnant, and reading this made me And had that same thought....Why is it so easy for someone like that who obviously doesn't care about her unborn child to get pregnant, and why is it so hard for someone like me (and all the other ladies who are dealing with IF issues), that would give my left arm and more to have a child?
