Re: So all us newly preggos... where will u deliver??
I am higher risk and pg with twins.
50% of twins usually need at least a short stay in a NICU.
NSUH is the best for that so I'll be making the trek from E. Northport to Manhasset.

I just switch OB's so I think St. Catherines or Stony Brook.

I'm in E. Northport, too and was originally going to NSUH also. I switched practitioners, so now I'll be at Stony Brook.

I am with delivering in North Shore or LIJ. They recently merged. Does anyone know if their NICU is level II or level III?

It's my understanding that the NICU at Manhasset is the best. If a premie is born elsewhere, if necessary, they will helicopter the child to NSUH Manhasset. As I'm having twins and there is a 50% chance one or both will be in NICU I would want all of us to be in the same hospital.
From NSUH website concerning neo-natal care...
The North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System staff is dedicated to providing the best in care to our neonatal patients. Be they well or sick, the hospitals in our system are equipped with specialists to treat them. Below is a summary of some of the neonatal services available.
Complete mother and baby care is the philosophy at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Infants and mothers are cared for as a couple from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. This arrangement promotes bonding between mother, father and baby. At any time you wish however, you may request to have your newborn return to the nursery. After 10 p.m., babies will be cared for in the nursery or, if the mother wishes, their baby may be brought to them for feedings on demand during the night. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 51 bassinet, fully equipped, state-of-the art, regional center for the intensive care of premature and sick full-term infants. Specially trained physicians, nurses and ancillary personnel use sophisticated monitoring and supportive equipment to oversee, on a moment-to-moment basis, their tiny patients. Parents are instructed in the day-to-day activities, methods of care, nutritional support (including breast feeding) and growth and development of their infants. Special emphasis is placed on helping parents cope with the demands of having an infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Hospital social workers and discharge coordinators offer parent support and act as the family's ombudsman. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to visit their infant daily.
At Forest Hills Hospital, a Level 2 Nursery provides care to neonates requiring specialized care. The unit's equipment and supplies are geared to the needs of these infants and the staff is specially trained. A multi-disciplinary approach of care is practiced. Parents have unlimited visiting in order to enable them easy access to their infants and to reduce separation trauma. The Level 2 staff will assess, evaluate and care for newborns from birth to their discharge. This benefits the community and patient greatly, as the hospital is now able to keep the mother and child together and handle high-risk pregnancies
The Maternal Child Unit at Glen Cove Hospital’s mission is to provide care in a family-centered environment. There is a nursery for well newborns and an intermediate one for newborns that require special nursing care. Twenty-four hour neonatology coverage enhances our ability to provide excellent care to our smallest patients.
At Plainview Hospital, well newborns are admitted directly into the nursery and, after stabilization, transferred to a designated nursery bassinet for the remainder of their stay, generally two to four days. Rooming-in of the infant with mother is encouraged and breast-feeding and on-demand feeding schedules are fostered. All infants are cared for utilizing a cooperative, interdisciplinary, family-centered approach. The unit provides care for many different conditions and diagnoses such as newborn transitional stage, regular newborn care and care of sick and critically ill newborns who have not left the hospital setting. Neonatologists are available in-house 24 hours a day, seven days a week to render care for the newborn during delivery and after, as well as consultation to the parents.
Approximately 1,900 newborns are delivered at Huntington Hospital each year. The majority are cared for by the pediatric attending staff. To assist with the care of sick newborns, there is a continuously staffed neonatology service from the Division of Newborn Medicine at North Shore University Hospital. Attending and fellow level specialists in neonatology manage a range of problems - from the delivery room to Huntington's Special Care Nursery, to discharge or transfer to the "well-baby" service - including prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome, neonatal infections, infants of diabetic mothers (IDM), hyperbilirubinemia, and others. Neonates who require prolonged high-acuity intensive care, surgical, or complex subspecialty care more efficiently delivered in the tertiary center may be transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Both transfer to and return from the tertiary center are carried out with thoughtful consideration to continuity of care.

I just wanted to let you know that I had an excellent experience this week at Good Sam. My L&D nurse was excellent. She really went above and beyond and made me feel like the only patient there and I know I wasn't. The 5th floor also had some really great nurses. They were very accomodating.

North Shore Manhasset
I had Michael there in 2004 and I cannot complain at all. It was almost like a hotel stay.
I'm looking forward to having this new baby there too.
